Publisher's Summary

Psychiatrist Daniel Z. Lieberman, MD, reveals how to join forces with your unconscious to make better decisions, find more meaning in everyday life, and develop a richer, more balanced way of living.

The conscious mind, the part of your mental life you experience directly, is responsible for only a tiny sliver of what science says is going on inside your brain. Most of what you experience, your moods, and the things you like or dislike—most of who you are—comes from a much more mysterious part of your mind: the unconscious.

And to really understand the influences of the unconscious, says psychiatrist Daniel Z. Liberman, coauthor of The Molecule of More, we need to look to something often considered science’s alter ego: magic. Drawing on the work of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, and with deep dives into what we can learn from ancient mystical traditions from alchemy to numerology to meditation, Spellbound weaves together ancient magical traditions, psychological research, and the latest neuroscientific discoveries, in order to bridge the gap between the conscious and unconscious mind.

Like it or not, your unconscious is currently the source of most of your choices. It’s the source of your passions, your energy, and your “gut instinct.” It can help you solve seemingly impossible problems with the gift of inspiration. But it’s not always working in your favor: The unconscious is wild and untamed, often leading us down self-destructive paths that leave us baffled by our own decisions. Spellbound helps you take a new path: one where you learn how to recognize the influences of the unconscious, and make it an ally in helping you become the person you were meant to be.

The human mind is perhaps the most mysterious thing in the universe. Science is only beginning to uncover its secrets, and some believe that we may never fully plumb its depths. But the ancient traditions of magic, traditions of understanding that have been built up over centuries, give us another window into the hidden facets of our humanity.

After all, as the visionary Arthur C. Clarke once said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

What the critics say

"…an inherently fascinating, informative, and thought-provoking study that is expertly performed by the narrative talents of Tom Parks. …absolutely recommended.” (Midwest Book Review)

“By integrating wisdom from psychology, philosophy, history, and storytelling, Spellbound provides a unique perspective on how science informs the psychological reality of magic.” (Carol Bernstein, former American Psychiatric Association president)

“In Spellbound, Dr. Daniel Lieberman beautifully weaves together stories from literature, philosophy, spirituality, mythology, and history with neuroscience and Jungian and Freudian psychology. Using clear, jargon-free language, he helps us understand how integrating the magical, mysterious, and metaphorical language of the unconscious, with our rational, orderly, and logical conscious minds, can help us to develop our true selves.” (Deborah L. Feldheim, MD, past president of the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis)

Absolutely Brilliant! EASILY in my top 5 books!

I was concerned this book would be wishy-washy spiritualism, occultism, religion bashing. Not the case at all. It's respectful, thoughtful, and analytical, bringing psychology, science, spiritualism, mathematics together in a way that is of HUGE benefit to my life journey. The narrator has a great voice and tempo, making 11 hours of listening easy. I will be listening to chapters of it again, as the book is laid out very well. Easily in my top 5 books on self-discovery/improvement and psychology (I have 140+), I'll be gifting it to a favourite psych professor with my next credit.

Informative and Engaging

This is the best book I have read (listened to) in some time. The structure of the information was well laid out. It was interesting to see all the ways modern science either overlaps or complements the other abstract/artistic/ancient models for the human mind+soul, and its growth through life. It was presented very insightfully without being too self-helpy, or too new-agey. That is difficult to find these days. I particularly enjoyed all the examples of behavioural experiments and their findings. It has given me a much better understanding of the subconscious than any other psychology book I have read thus far. I will definitely be listening to this again and am planning to buy the print book as well for reference, as there were so many times I felt like marking a passage for frequent re-reading.
