Publisher's Summary

The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact with which Kraft Lawrence is well acquainted. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares have come his way, the peddler has pretty well settled into his routine - that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. Taking the form of a fetching girl with wolf ears and a tail, Holo has wearied of tending to harvests in the countryside and strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of "Holo the Wisewolf" to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. What kind of businessman could turn down such an offer? Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing. Will this wolf girl turn out to be too wild to tame?

Holo is the best.

I've watched the anime and I need more Spice and Wolf, particularly more Holo lol. So now I'm going to read all of the LN series (or have them read to me rather).

having the anime's original VA for Lawrence is awesome. Holos VA makes her appearance in V3 I do believe. This is the first journey of Holo and Lawrence, where it all started and if you watched the anime, please read the LNs, it's how the story is supposed to be because anime adaptations change things and leave other things out.

why are you still reading this, buy it already.

Falling in love all over again

I've enjoyed the series for years and this has rekindled my love for it. I got ahead of myself writing that I would love it all the way back in March, it's June now and I've just finished it. I am very satisfied with it and now the thing I'm looking forward to the most this month is the second book releasing on here as well!

Compelling Listen for Anime and Lit. Fans Alike

With the number of tropes in anime, manga or light novels which tend to seem confusing or off putting to those not already a fan on that media, as an anime fan myself, I can sometimes struggle with recommending titles to people not already familiar with the medium(s).

This hesitation however does not apply here, in the case of Spice and Wolf. If you are a fan of fantastic fantasy/ medieval settings and world building, of well researched economic theory, as original stories with unique conflicts rooted in money and trade and of slow-burn but extremely well written romances, I'd say you're in for a treat with this series.

To my fellow Spice and Wolf fans, the fact that J Michael Tatum - the voice of the series protagonist Kraft Lawrence- is narrating will make the purchase of this audiobook probably worth it to you all on its own. To my fellow anime fans, with the excellence Season one and two currently available on Crunchyroll and with a season Three on its way, the great writing here may give you a new series to become excited about.

And if you fall in neither camp and are simply wondering whether the book stands on its own as a well written work a fiction and literature, my answer would be a resounding yes. It may be a bit slow for some people, tis true, between the gradually developing romance and all the economic talk. But if you have the patience for it, the excellently developed setting and the strong writing of its two leads make this series when the more enjoyable ones I've read in recent years. Anime fan or no, this series comes highly recommended.
