Story
Twelve-year-old Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt Fitzroy believes that Henry, the hippopotamus at the brand-new FunJungle, has been murdered. The zoo’s top brass claim the hippo went belly up the natural way, but Teddy and his feisty friend Summer McCraken have other ideas. Could the culprit be FunJungle’s animal-hating head of operations? Or is it FunJungle’s owner - Summer’s dad - a man who is much more concerned about money than animal welfare? The deeper Teddy and Summer dig, the more danger they’re in - because when it comes to hippo homicide, the truth can’t be caged!

As full of excitement and the unexpected as his world-famous, best-selling books, Roald Dahl's tales of his own childhood are completely fascinating and fiendishly funny. Did you know that Roald Dahl nearly lost his nose in a car accident? Or that he was once a chocolate candy tester for Cadbury's? Have you heard about his involvement in the Great Mouse Plot of 1924? Story
My name is Chase Cooper, and I'm a 6th grade ninja. It's my first day at a different school and the only person I know is my cousin, Zoe (but she might be a little too cool for me). I was just another scrawny kid until a group of ninjas recruited me into their clan. It was a world of trouble I wasn't prepared for, which is why I kept this diary (or "chronicle" as my dad would call it) - to warn other kids about the dangers of becoming a ninja. They say history is destined to repeat itself...well, not if I can help it.

Story
Link, Michael, and Dana live in a quiet town. But it's woken up very quickly when someone sneaks into school and vandalizes it with a swastika. Nobody can believe it. How could such a symbol of hate end up in the middle of their school? Who would do such a thing? Because Michael was the first person to see it, he's the first suspect. Because Link is one of the most popular guys in school, everyone's looking to him to figure it out. And because Dana's the only Jewish girl in the whole town, everyone's treating her more like an outsider than ever.

Publisher's Summary
Can an undercover nerd become a superstar agent? Ben Ripley sure hopes so - and his life may depend on it!
Ben Ripley may only be in middle school, but he's already pegged his dream job: CIA or bust. Unfortunately for him, his personality doesn't exactly scream "secret agent". In fact Ben is so awkward, he can barely get to school and back without a mishap. Because of his innate nerdiness, Ben is not surprised when he is recruited for a magnet school with a focus on science - but he's entirely shocked to discover that the school is actually a front for a junior CIA academy. Could the CIA really want him?
Actually, no. There's been a case of mistaken identity - but that doesn't stop Ben from trying to morph into a supercool undercover agent, the kind that always gets the girl. And through a series of hilarious misadventures, Ben realizes he might actually be a halfway decent spy...if he can survive all the attempts being made on his life!

Great book, but...
Great story, fun theme, but just beware there is language in the book that is emphasized in an audio version. So not necessary and added nothing. My 7, 12 and 14 year old all enjoyed, but multiple uses of curse words ruined it for me. Why do authors feel the need to add language into a children’s book?

Warning, strong language not for little ears
Would you try another book from Stuart Gibbs and/or Gibson Frazier?
I do not believe that I would get another of these books. The plot is great, the characters are awesome, but WHY, WHY the language. We are pretty careful about the words that we use in our home. This book had many uses of "damn" and "ass." It's so disappointing. I was so excited about the potential, but honestly the language ruined it for me; It was just completely out of place.
Would you recommend Spy School to your friends? Why or why not?
No, I would not recommend this to friend because of the strong language.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Very engaging plot and distinct characters.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
My kids were horrified the first time someone swore, and I was embarrassed for picking out the book. We had listened to the two Space Case books, but this one is more violent, and not appropriate for little (8 year old) kids to listen to. Not worth the money/credits.
Has Spy School turned you off from other books in this genre?
I won't get another Spy School book, and think twice before downloading Stuart Gibbs books for this age group.

Don't Get Started With this Author
These books are OK, a bit derivative, but OK for young readers. My problem is that when you get to book 6, the author decides to preach to his audience at the end of the book about the Paris Climate Accords. The decision to not support President Obama's 'personal' wish to participate is a complex subject, and does not indicate that the United States is not committed to improving the well being of Planet Earth. However, the author lectures his readers with a very narrow and unsubstantiated point of view as if it is absolute, irrefutable fact. This is entirely inappropriate, especially considering the targeted age of his intended audience. Parents and educators beware. His remarks are indoctrination, not education.
