Publisher's Summary

Can an undercover nerd become a superstar agent? Ben Ripley sure hopes so - and his life may depend on it!

Ben Ripley may only be in middle school, but he's already pegged his dream job: CIA or bust. Unfortunately for him, his personality doesn't exactly scream "secret agent". In fact Ben is so awkward, he can barely get to school and back without a mishap. Because of his innate nerdiness, Ben is not surprised when he is recruited for a magnet school with a focus on science - but he's entirely shocked to discover that the school is actually a front for a junior CIA academy. Could the CIA really want him?

Actually, no. There's been a case of mistaken identity - but that doesn't stop Ben from trying to morph into a supercool undercover agent, the kind that always gets the girl. And through a series of hilarious misadventures, Ben realizes he might actually be a halfway decent spy...if he can survive all the attempts being made on his life!

Great book, but...

Great story, fun theme, but just beware there is language in the book that is emphasized in an audio version. So not necessary and added nothing. My 7, 12 and 14 year old all enjoyed, but multiple uses of curse words ruined it for me. Why do authors feel the need to add language into a children’s book?

We couldn't turn it off

We chose this book to listen to as we headed out Memorial Day weekend. My 4th and 2nd graders loved the book - we couldn't stop listening to the story. So much fun!

Warning, strong language not for little ears

Would you try another book from Stuart Gibbs and/or Gibson Frazier?

I do not believe that I would get another of these books. The plot is great, the characters are awesome, but WHY, WHY the language. We are pretty careful about the words that we use in our home. This book had many uses of "damn" and "ass." It's so disappointing. I was so excited about the potential, but honestly the language ruined it for me; It was just completely out of place.

Would you recommend Spy School to your friends? Why or why not?

No, I would not recommend this to friend because of the strong language.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Very engaging plot and distinct characters.

Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness

Nothing makes me feel out of step in society as much as reading some of these book reviews then listening to the books. Perfect example? This book. When I was searching for a book to read with my 7 year old, I thought Spy School might be a good choice. The main criticism of this book was that the author used the words " damn" and "ass." Okay, I thought. I don't really consider those curse words so we should be good. When I first started the book, I had to stop every 5 minutes to explain to my son what the words meant and then i just gave up. I don't think writers should talk down to kids but I also don't think kids should have to endure writers whose characters all speak like they are sad, 65 year old tenured professors. ALL THE CHARACTERS SPEAK THIS WAY. This author couldn't write the way kids speak if his life depended on it. And the descriptions of the main spy gal came across as creepy to me. I didn't care about the protagonist since he sounded like a pretentious d. bag, not because he used the words ASS and DAMN. By the way, kids don't use those words as curse words either. I'm going to have to find another Children's author that actually has met a kid once in their life. And the VO artist reading this book was embarrassing to listen to especially when he performed "the nerdy" stereotyped character, Murray.

PS. I'm surprised one of the characters didn't use "Chifforobe" at some point.

Great book for all ages. Boys 8 and 11

Great book. Fun, entertaining, great writing and the family lives or. Not a little kids d book but all will enjoy. Gibson Frazier added all the character to each and made it all worth it! I need more books read by Frazier!

Swears

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

My kids were horrified the first time someone swore, and I was embarrassed for picking out the book. We had listened to the two Space Case books, but this one is more violent, and not appropriate for little (8 year old) kids to listen to. Not worth the money/credits.

Has Spy School turned you off from other books in this genre?

I won't get another Spy School book, and think twice before downloading Stuart Gibbs books for this age group.
