Francis was born in the early 1180s into a wealthy merchant family in the Italian town of Assisi. Growing up, he lived a privileged life of wealth and comfort. But as a young adult in 1201, he fought as a knight for Assisi in a war against its neighboring town of Perugia. He was captured and imprisoned for a year. During this time, Francis turned to spirituality.
