Publisher's Summary

DI Nikki Galena's close friend Helen Brook is involved in a serious accident where she is trapped in a collapsed cellar. After her hard-won recovery, Helen is still getting flashbacks to a man she says was down there with her and who confessed to a murder. But no trace of this man can be found.

Then Helen tells Nikki that someone is watching her. But is all this in her friend's imagination and part of her post-traumatic stress?

And why is Stephen Cox back in town? He's the villain who tore Nikki's life apart and he seems to have returned to wreak more chaos. Before long, the whole town is on the verge of hysteria and her friend's fear will lead Nikki and Joseph on a very dangerous trail.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you in suspense until its heart-stopping conclusion.

Excellent as usual!

Still loving this series - great characters, creepy villains & compelling storylines. Even though I only gave 4 stars for the narration, I do think that the narrator does a very good job given the large number of characters she's required to narrate, both male & female. My favourite character is Professor Rory Wilkinson & I hope we see more of him in the rest of the series.

Cannot wait to start the next book in the series!

Joy Ellis' stories are so very interesting! They grab your attention and hold you until the very end. After listening to a few of her stories, I also love the character development and back stories. I still have trouble with the narrator but she does not ruin my enjoyment of the story.

Great story line. Another winner! Well narrated!

I really enjoyed the story line. Great characters and a few new ones too! This is another wonderful Nikki Galina book. Narration was easy to understand by this non-Brit.

galena is a crappy detective!

I've read a few of these books, and each book in the series only shows a crappy police officer. this book especially. first, she brushes off her friend's fears, and when her friend is murdered, it's I should, poor me, and then she passes the blame to the boyfriend to make herself feel better. when he is murdered, it's oops, i should have been able to save him, but again, instead of her own actions, the blame is passed. "It's the crappy new detective who held back information. "...um, she is supposed to review things and didn't trust the new member of her team, so why are his actions surprising??? again, passing the blame. Then, she's the cause of a man who is clearly mentally fragile, committing suicide bc of her actions and words to him. THEN, she does a shifty background check on the murderer and fails to see the similarities in the handwriting. she's like a headless chicken, running around in circles and only by pure luck in the last 30 minutes of the book, or by way of someone else's detective work, her team solves the case(s).

if it wasn't for the fact that I am listening to these books, I would have abandoned the series.

I love the narrator, but her voice for Nikki is so harsh that she sounds like a late fifties woman. is that her age?

Great twists & turns, plus a lovely ending!

Stalker on the Fens, written by Joy Ellis and narrated by Henrietta Meire, was, as per usual, full of great twists and turns! I could not figure out who dunnit! It was a wonderful story full of interesting characters, plus a lovely ending. I must get on to Book 6: Captive on the Fens!

I love this English police procedural series!

Stalker on the Fens is Book 5 in the DI Nikki Galena series. Like each of the prior four it is a wonderful suspense thriller this novel is special. The novels are set in the Fens which is an area on England's central east coast approximately 50 miles northeast of London. Detective inspector Nikki Galena is a marvelous protagonist. Narrator Henrietta Meire reads in the clipped English accent most common in the area. It can be a little difficult for Americans at first, but understanding comes quickly. Author Joy Ellis is a master of the police procedural genre. I highly recommend this series and this novel.

The sixth audio novel in this seven novel series will be released in two weeks. The title is Captive on the Fens. It is currently available for pre-order at Audible, but is less expensively ordered through Amazon's Whispersync for Voice.

Stalker on the Fens#4, Hunted#3, Shadow#2,Crime#1

This four book series -- Crime on the Fens, Shadow over the Fens, Hunted on the Fens and Stalke on the Fens -- is GREAT! And they nestle together beautifully, capturing the depth and growth of the characters as they go. Do start with the first (Crime on the Fens) and you will be hooked to learn more about what happens to DI Nikki Galena and her murder unit of detectives. The story lines are very, very good and the narration fits so perfectly with the locale of the story. Loved every minute of this entire series.

The narrator can be super annoying!

Chose this book at random to leave a review, but this could apply to any of the series.

I really like all of the books in this series (currently on number 7), and Joy Ellis in general - but often in spite of the narrator, I'm afraid. In fact, so often in spite of the narrator that I had to stop and start a number of times throughout the books.

The voices for the main characters are okay, but she chooses a very strange, monotone start-stop cadence for many a sentence, and seems to disregard punctuation, and in particular the voices of some of the supporting characters are just plain annoying (Rory!). Similarly, some of the female side characters speak in very girlish sopranos that I found very distracting.

I"m not very familiar with Lincolnshire accents, so I can't comment on the quality of those, though.

This narrator issue would have stood out to me anyway, but it is especially true in comparison with the Jackman and Evans series, where Rory is one of my favourites because he actually sounds credible.

I don't know about this

I like the characters and location, but all the crimes in the series have been focused on the police, co-workers, family, and friends. I would like to see the characters working on a crime that is not personal. As for this story, I stopped with Helen needing her partner to -- be there for her -- along with outsiders getting into the mix. Here in the USA when you need to -- be there -- for someone, there is FMLA paperwork for the worker, the partner, the doctors, and approval from the company for that to happen. And it was annoying to see outsiders interfering in another couple's relationship. I was unable to finish the story because there was nothing to enjoy. I didn't care who did it, why they did it, or why Helen was involved. I cancelled my pre-order for the next book.

Why is the narrator speed reading

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Henrietta Meire?

This narrator has been pretty good up until now. I don't know if it was the sound engineer or the narrator herself, but it pretty much ruined the book .At first I thought it was me, then I listened to other books and realized,no, something is wrong with the narration speed. Couldn't enjoy the book at all Sometimes I wonder if someone is in charge of listening to the titles Audible puts out. I guess there are too many to screen for problems like this.

Gripping mystery with great characters

DI Nikki Galena's friend, Helen Brooks, thinks she's being followed.

Helen was badly hurt in a building collapse a year ago, including some brain damage, and she's got some odd memories that don't seem supported by evidence. For instance, she thinks there was a man also in that collapsed basement with her, on the other side of a wall, who talked to her for a while before Nikki and Sergeant Joseph Easter, by chance the two officers closest to the scene, arrived. Yet no one else was in the building, nor was any evidence found that there had been.

So is she really being followed? Or is she still feeling the effects of the trauma and brain damage?

Helen's boyfriend, Andrew Gregory, is certain it's the latter. Nikki isn't sure he's right--but she's definitely not sure he's wrong. And every piece of evidence that seems to support Helen's story is quickly exploded--for instance, a scruffy young man who is seen hanging out near her flat, when picked up, turns out to be the unapproved boyfriend of a young woman in a neighboring house. Dad doesn't approve, so they have to sneak around.

Meanwhile, Nikki and Joseph are sure their old nemesis Cox is back in the area, but he's as elusive as ever. And there's a tension in the rougher part of town, that might be related to the Leonard family, whose patriarch, and unlikely friend of Nikki's, is dying. As much as she wants to help Helen, she's both very busy, and not at all sure how to help, or what kind of help Helen really needs.

Of course, everything changes when Helen is found dead.

This is a gripping, absorbing story, and Nikki, Joseph, their colleagues and friends, are all interesting people worth getting to know better. This is a series where the characters keep growing, becoming richer and more interesting as their experiences change them.

Recommended.

Brava to the author and narrator

I love this series. I'm so glad this fifth book has finally been released in audio format.

This one kept me up most of the night. I couldn't put it down. I didn't figure out who-done-it until after it was obvious but I usually don't try. More fun to just let it happen. Nikki and Joseph are great characters as are crew on their team. The murder(s) are vividly described and I think it was important because it let us feel what Nikki was hit with. Great story.

The narration is very well done. I look forward to the next book which I have pre-ordered.
