Vernestra Rwoh is a new Jedi Knight at age 16, but her first real assignment feels an awful lot like babysitting. She's been charged with supervising 12-year old aspiring inventor Avon Starros on a cruiser headed to the dedication of a wondrous new space station called Starlight Beacon. But soon into their journey, bombs go off aboard the cruiser. While the adult Jedi try to save the ship, Vernestra, Avon, Avon's droid, J-6, a Jedi Padawan, and an ambassador's son make it to an escape shuttle, but communications are out and supplies are low.

Bland wars
This books does not add to the myths of star wars. Felt like a cookie cutter adventure where the DM stole some dry toast and tried to make it sound like a high class grilled cheese sandwich. The poured luke warm water one it. Sure the toast had a bit of character, and there was one twist, but not worth a second go through.

Another great read in The High Republic series!
I consider myself a Star Wars super nerd, this being the 81st Star Wars book I've read... and I have thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 books of this new era. The story was engaging, the characters were well rounded and had interesting backgrounds and development as well. The Jedi do seem to understand the force differently in this series, but it is an era in the past, so I think it will fits within the Star Wars universe. They are building up the conflict well, although there is only so much an enemy can say, when they say they will destroy the Jedi... but obviously they haven't since this is a prequel lol
the story was great, the narration was great, the cool Jedi sequences were also great, I don't see any reason why a Star Wars fan shouldn't get into this series and enjoy it!

Good for Jedi-lovers
Personally, I really liked it for the dive into Jedi psychology, things we don't know about the order and different insight from different jedis.
Story-wise though, its much more Linear than Light of the Jedi, but still nicely ties with it imo.

A great Starwars story
I've heard a lot if negativity around this book and I really don't know why. Is it really all due to the geode character? He was an obvious bit if comic relief for an otherwise pretty serious story. just give it a chance people :)
Anyhow, if you love Star Wars, specifically jedi then this js a great story. Claudia Grey writing is engaging and feels authentic to the universe. Much like her other novel, "Master and Apprentice" (which if you haven't read; go change that now!). She expands in the jedis relationship with the force, themselves and the governments of the starwars universe.
I would suggest reading "light of the Jedi" first, however I found that book to be a bit dry at times and this is definitely a more exciting and engaging story.
There are some genuinely wonderful characters introduced in this book and I hope we get much more. If I'm being quite honest this book is more interesting that all 3 of the sequel films lol.
Also the voice acting and performance by Dan Bittner is top notch.

If you see Claudia Gray's name, buy it
As someone who has been a long time lover of Star Wars books, I was not impressed with the early output of the new canon after they made the old EU non-canon. But Claudia has knocked it out of the park every time and she keeps me invested in the star wars literary universe as a whole with every book she writes. Claudia knows how to write awesome and interesting characters and really hook you with the story. The performance by Dan Bittner is awesome too and kept me listening.

Decent Star Wars Novel - Not Sure About the Tree People Though
The performance was good and the story is fairly well woven into the other High Republic book. But the whole evil-ent-conquerors vibe that comes out of nowhere in the final couple hours made me feel like I was listening to an odd crossover between Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. It felt entirely out of place seeing that the Nihil are supposed to be the main antagonists of the High Republic story arc and now the Gringer (evil ents) have been introduced as some sort of ancient conquering race that are closely connected with the dark-side and they might somehow become another major antagonist. That made the story feel disjointed, like I was listening to a book written in the Star Wars universe and then got transported to some weird crossover with Middle-Earth.

One of the best new canon books
I agree it's better than Light of the Jedi, especially in character development and the deeper questions it raises. Also, I like the primary protagonist, being a Jedi who actually reads and is interested in learning the same things about the galaxy and its history that Star Wars fans are interested in.
Also, personally I liked Bittner's narration. I think Marc Thompson is too cheesy and over-acting. This is similar in style but slightly dialed back.
