State and Revolution (1917) describes the role of the state in society, the necessity of proletarian revolution, and the theoretic inadequacies of social democracy in achieving revolution. It describes the inherent nature of the state as a tool for class oppression, a creation born of one social class' desire to control all other social classes. Whether a dictatorship or a democracy, the state remains in the control of the ruling class. Even in a democratic capitalist republic, the ruling class will never willingly relinquish political power, maintaining it via various strategies. Hence, according to this view, communist revolution is the sole remedy for the abolition of the state.

What a terrible intro! Whoever wrote the introduction didn't actually read the book. Translation was considerably weaker than the Progress Publishers edition which detracted from the clarity and obscured some passages.

Did a great job of explaining the function of state across economic theory. Will read again in the future. Easy enough to follow even if you aren't well read on the time period, but maybe look up names you see in the contents beforehand to get a better picture.

The content of the book is what it is and should come as no surprise to those looking to read it. But the audio engineering and narrator's performance were *lacking*. At numerous points were sentences and phrases repeatedly as if retakes were simply stitched together without editing and the German book titles were butchered like the narrator saw them for the first time and gave it a stab. Clearly none of them were rehearsed or their pronunciation looked up prior. Breathlessly rushing through these titles did not help. Translating them or consulting a single German speaker might have though.
