Publisher's Summary

A tarnished legacy. A dangerous mission. The beginning of an epic destiny....

Nobleman and born soldier Ben Stiger never backs down from a fight. Even as the son of an infamous imperial general, an outcast from society, he refuses to crumble under the unforgiving shadow of his once-powerful family’s disgrace. When he’s reassigned from his crack company to the struggling southern army, he’s eager to help turn the tide against a growing deadly rebellion.

Supported by his faithful lieutenant, Eli, one of the last remaining elven rangers, and a holy Paladin on a quest for the High Father, Stiger fights to gain control of his new company, resentful and mediocre soldiers, who he must train and then lead on a desperate mission to reach an outpost cut off by the enemy. But as he force-marches his men through hostile territory, the veteran commander faces more than he ever expected: rebels, bandits, a magic relic from an age long gone, and an ancient evil freshly risen that has to potential to destroy the empire he loves and serves.

Can one outcast hero make a difference and save his empire from annihilation?

good story but voice acting needed help

I had a hard time keeping interest in this book due to trying to get used to the narrator. Prior to this book, I just finished the Sharpe series read by Rupert Farley. So my expectations were high. Brand doesn't do the voice acting as well but still reads the story well. Audiobook... not an audio book performance.
Still a good story and I just downloaded the next book in the series.

Great story

loved it but 8hrs is too short for the cost of an audio book. They should all be a minimum 16hrs.

Great Series

This is a great series if you like Roman Legion and Fantasy D&D. Detail to combat tactics was awesome.

Terrific!

My first audiobook in a very long time. Previously I listened to one narrated by the author. Mistake. It soured me on all audiobooks. Only reason I signed up was because I was watching the author on twitch and wanted to support him. The narration is simply fantastic and has now completely hooked me on audiobooks. The pacing and story were very well done and held my interest right to the end. I’m going to get the rest of the series and am thankful it’s the same narrator for all.
