I have read a few books about the suicide forest in Japan and this is the scariest one yet.

This Jeremy Bates story follows a group of English-as-a-Second-Language teachers in Japan deciding to hike, explore, and camp in the famed Aokigahara on the slopes of Mount Fuji. The book includes a satisfying mix of campy jump scare action-gore, moody philosophical discussions surrounding mortality and suicide, and supernatural/paranormal events.
Bates tends to draw out the drama - his pacing isn't great - and I didn't really like protagonist 'Ethan' or the snarky relationships between the stranded youths.. but the book is fun.

As to presentation: Joe Hempel is an above-average narrator. There are occasional stretches where it's quite obvious that he's reading from a text sitting open in his lap, but his diction, timbre, cadence, and voice-acting are all exemplary.

In toto, 'Suicide Forest: World's Scariest Places Series, Book 1' merits 8 stars out of 10. It's more of a "Lost In The Woods" tale with evil villains than a macabre Ghost-infused story.. but it was a great find on the 'Plus' menu. It's worth a Credit.

Narration was great, and the storyline was always engaging and never dull. I definitely would recommend it.

I enjoyed the twist on the folklore of The Suicide Forest. I did find the story dragged at times but overall a good telling. The narrator did a great job.

That was the good part of this listening experience. The rest, well, not so good. I found the plot tedious and the characters boring and one-dimensional. It was all, in my humble opinion, rather amateurish. As for Joe Hempel, his voice is just too immature to capture the nuance of voice-acting.

At least it was free.
