Publisher's Summary

The outbreak began in New York. Soon it had spread to the rest of the world. People were attacked and infected, and they died. Then they came back. Nowhere is safe from the undead.

As anarchy and civil war took grip across the globe, Britain was quarantined. The press was nationalized. Martial law, curfews, and rationing were implemented. It wasn't enough. An evacuation was planned.

Bill Wright broke his leg on the day of the outbreak. Unable to join the evacuation, he watched from his window as the streets filled with refugees, he watched as the streets emptied once more. He watched as they filled up again, this time with the undead.

He is trapped. He is alone. He is running out of food and water. He knows that to reach the safety of the enclaves, he will have to venture out into the wasteland that once was England. On that journey he will ultimately discover the horrific truth about the outbreak, a decades-old conspiracy, and his unwitting part in it.

This is the first volume of his journal.

Strangely compelling

At the begining of the novel, I was wondering when the real action would start but I found that I enjoyed very much the story of the loneliness, despair, hope and journey of the main character. By the end of the first book, I was walking with him on his journey and was half disappointed that it was too short. I must read the other books. The narration is exceptional and give even more depth to the narrative.

Awesome zombie story

Would you consider the audio edition of Surviving the Evacuation, Book 1: London to be better than the print version?

Having read the ebook previously this audio version really brought the story to life.

What about Tim Bruce’s performance did you like?

I loved the British accent

Any additional comments?

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Frank Tayells books

Not What I expected

The book wasn't what I was expecting. It didn't have the the action or gore that is typically associated with a zombie book. The main character was believable. The thoughts that he described are ones I would likely be thinking. The main character developed into someone that was likable. I am glad I stuck through some of the slower parts of the book.

Enjoyed enough to buy 2nd immediately

I really enjoyed the writing style of this Z book. the narrator was perfect (I always listen @ 1.25). This book made me wonder how I would have reacted if all alone in the world... don't think I would have faired as well. He ended up being a lot more resourceful than I first thought he would be and I wondered at times when he would start questioning his role. glad book 2 is on audible and looking forward to the listen. I see there are more of this series on kindle but not on audible as yet.
I have listened to almost all of the other Z books available... Zombie Fallout .. Adrian's Undead Diaries, Extinction Edge, DEAD, Grahams Resolution to name a few. different rhythm and pace to the story but interesting.

The Thinking Mans Zombie novel.

This book is very different from the average zombie. It was " English Middle Class Bureaucrat meets Zombies". The first thing that struck a cord with me was Bill's broken leg. I broke my leg pretty bad in the Army and one of the hardest things to deal with is the acute sense of being so vulnerable and helpless. Legs are a great tool in ZA. Bill is not a badass operator with a bunker of supplies. He is a policy maker who assumed he would not only help draft a national evacuation, but be rescued as well. Instead he is completly alone and crippled in South London. This book has some very slow parts and no dialogue, but if you like detail and decision making you will enjoy it. I will be giving the next one a listen.

Worst book I've listened to so far.

If you like listening to someone whine and complain through an entire book then your in luck. The entire story seemed to have no point and rambled on and on. No satisfaction in the story at all.

A wussy bureaucrat caught in a zombie apocalypse...

There is only one character in this story - other than the zombies of course - and crumbling London. Part claustrophobic hiding in his flat, part daring escape, part scrounging and dodging. Well written with an interesting evolving character's story told by a plucky narrator with a charming voice and English accent. Light on gore and action - he's a sneaker dodger type- no sex thank heavens, little if any swearing. Quite good overall, zombie plague with a stiff upper lip.

Long, to much back story, no action

Frustratingly slow and boring. To much back story, 90% of the book. Very little action and no contact with others. Boring
