About this listen
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Two outcasts find themselves caught in a web of dangerous magic and dark secrets that could change the world forever in the start of a riveting epic fantasy series from the author of The Shadowhunter Chronicles.
“Everything I look for in fantasy.”—George R. R. Martin
A POPSUGAR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR
In the vibrant city-state of Castellane, the richest of nobles and the most debauched of criminals have one thing in common: the constant search for wealth, power, and the next hedonistic thrill.
Kel is an orphan, stolen from the life he knew to become the Sword Catcher—the body double of a royal heir, Prince Conor Aurelian. He and Conor are as close as brothers, but his destiny is to die for Conor. No other future is possible.
Lin Caster is a physician from a small community whose members still possess magical abilities. But despite her skills, she cannot heal her best friend without access to forbidden knowledge.
After a failed assassination attempt brings Lin and Kel together, they are drawn into the web of the mysterious Ragpicker King, the ruler of Castellane’s criminal underworld. But as long-kept secrets begin to unravel and forbidden attractions arise, they must ask themselves: Is knowledge worth the price of betrayal? And will their discoveries plunge their nation into war—and the world into chaos?

Long ago, Requiem was plagued by war and abandoned by the gods but Death saved the suffering people, giving each soul a hundred years of immortality. With that grace, he also sent two Maidens. One of Life, for healing and comfort, and one of Death, the only person in the world with the ability to kill. Generations later, the Life Maiden is missing and Princess Deyanira is nothing more than a trained weapon. A hunter. A murderer wrenched into Death's dark court to have the name of her next victim seared onto her palm.

Even though she's not one of them, Brynn has spent her life among the Alaha, training to be a guard and waiting for the chance to attend the annual market hosted by the Kenta—the very same people who exiled her adopted community to a life at sea. Going to the market is a rite of passage eagerly anticipated by all young guards, but Brynn does not anticipate breaking a century-long peace treaty while there.

What the critics say
“Expert worldbuilding, swordplay, and politics, a colorful cast of characters, and a story that kept me reading from the first page to the last.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author George R. R. Martin
“A gorgeously built world of decadence, betrayal, and grand adventure. From the decadent and drunken parties of the nobles, to the dens of crime lords in the Warren and Maze, to the Sault, where the devotees of a lost goddess are penned, the city of Castellane makes the perfect backdrop for a delightful cast of characters to befriend, betray, and romance one another. This is Cassandra Clare at her cleverest, twistiest and most heart-stopping—a triumph of a book.”—Holly Black, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Night
“Clare plunges us into a thrilling world built with precision and brimming with enchantment. Her spellbinding cast of outlaws, healers, royals, and rogues will have you questioning your allegiances with every delicious turn of the plot. This is fantasy at its finest.”—Leigh Bardugo, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Hell Bent
Christian Coulson has narrated another series that anyone who liked this book should check out. It's called The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue. It is hilarious and if you liked him as Kel you would love him as Monty too!

Kel is an orphan who is chosen to be the best friend and body double for the Prince of Castellane, Conor. Lin is a healer who seeks forbidden knowledge to save her friend. After being drawn together after a failed assassination attempt, Kel, Lin, and Conor are faced with conspiracies, criminal underworlds, and secrets that could unravel all they know.
The characters are interesting and layered, exactly what I would expect from a Cassandra Clare story. Kel and Lin have their worlds altered as their belief systems are tested, and they are loyal to their causes and convictions. All of the side characters stand out, the largest of course being Conor, who has all the charm and charisma to make people love him.
The world is fresh and complex. This is a political story above all else, and it shows in the details Clare adds. Castellane feels like a real place you can immerse yourself in without getting lost.
That said, the plot was a little slow for my tastes. Things were happening and there was a good deal of drama, but the threats felt a bit distant until the end. I think I was expecting a few more action scenes, but this is a much different book.
I do think that if you love political drama and court intrigue, this is the perfect book for you. It’s a slow burn with layered characters, and promises more excitement in future stories.
Political Intrigue and Drama

I love the love interests and forbidden love tropes, but we needed a bit more action in the first 3/4 of the books. This is definitely a political drama, not a romance.
