Good story, for the most part.

I enjoyed this story. It's particularly nice to have Elminster doing something, where in his titles books by Greenwood he's mostly boasting about that thing he did one time.

The core characters are good but don't exactly grow from their introduction a book ago. I also find the female naivete a bit rich.

There's also times where it seems there's a great much ado about nothing.

This isn't helped by a stiff narrator, who really only does two voices plus Elminster. She has improved over the last book, but that really wasn't a challenge given just how bad book one started off.

Rolling through the story, scene changes or dialogue between two or more characters is just one droning bleed at times. I regularly had to rewind to listen over again to entire chapters because my mind preferred to drift.

There's also circumstances which makes no sense short of this having been someone's home game and they rolled a Nat 20 on a skill check.

I did like several scenes and circumstances. This book isn't irredeemable. It just requires a great deal of concentration and patience.
