The disappearance of a small boy many years ago when the small Suffolk village still housed a Thor missile site during the cold war intrigues Marelle Buckleigh when she moves into a house which she has jointly inherited with her brother. Naturally inquisitive, she follows the story and finds herself drawn to Jacob, a sad, reclusive character who lives in a caravan on the abandoned airfield that the house adjoins. Is he just that strange and volatile character the villagers say he is or is there more to him? As she nurtures their friendship, she discovers he has a connection to the missing child which he has kept a secret for most of his life. Immersed in her growing affection for him, Marelle finds her life becoming entwined with his and the many unexpected complications this brings. Despite mounting condemnation and accusations from the locals when a discovery is unearthed, Marelle allies herself with Jacob and sets herself on a path she has to walk alone.
