Publisher's Summary
A remote military research station sends out a frantic distress call, ending with a chilling final command: Kill us all! Personnel from the neighboring base rush in to discover everyone already dead - and not just the scientists, but every living thing for 50 square miles is annihilated: every animal, plant, and insect, even bacteria.
The land is entirely sterile - and the blight is spreading.
To halt the inevitable, Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma must unravel a threat that rises out of the distant past, to a time when Antarctica was green and all life on Earth balanced upon the blade of a knife. Following clues from an ancient map rescued from the lost Library of Alexandria, Sigma will discover the truth about an ancient continent, about a new form of death buried under miles of ice.
From millennia-old secrets out of the frozen past to mysteries buried deep in the darkest jungles of today, Sigma will face its greatest challenge to date: stopping the coming extinction of mankind.
But is it already too late

Love the series, hate the narrator
I love this book series, great action and good fun. But this newer narrator doesn't know how to read action books. This guy should be doing bedtime reading, hard time getting into the book listening to this guy. Wish they would get Peter Jay fernandez again. He is great with these books.

Rollins for the win...again
Baskous is my favourite Rollins narrator, he sometimes makes me chuckle when he tries to do a female voice but for the most part he injects some high octane energy which is appreciated.
I also appreciate Rollins scientific background and adventure with just enough human relationship “drama” to keep it relatable but nothing too mushy. I’ve read all of Rollins books in paperback - enjoying them again in audio.

Third Rollins book in a row diminished by Narrator
Where does The 6th Extinction rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I have listened to all Sigma Force novels prior to this and loved them until recently. Vibrant characters from the past are all muted now. Storyline is appealing but the attempt to view the next chapter in their lives is tepid. All characters are barely recognizable now due to the newly inserted narrator.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sadly none. No fire.
Would you be willing to try another one of Christian Baskous’s performances?
This is my last try with this narrator. His voice and performance are wispy and poignant. A grandfather telling a fairy tale. He does not fit these books.

Listening to this book is a guaranteed headache
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Let me think.... Never let this narrator perform another book again!
What could James Rollins have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Tough question.... PICK ANOTHER NARRATOR!
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Better question... How didn't the narrator detract from this book?
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The narrator was so bad I literally could not listen for one more second as my head is pounding from his horribly overly dramatic monotone performance.
Any additional comments?
Please pay attention to the reviews. I choose not to and am paying the price for not doing so myself. I love Sigma Force stories and do not have time to read, so I am left with audio as my only choice. If Rollins decides to keep using this narrator, I will be forced to end my listen with this book. I forced myself to listen for 4 hours and no matter how I tried, could not find any way to make this book enjoyable. The narrator delivers every line as if he is doing Shakespeare with over the top dramatics. And as if that was not enough, he is severely limited in his vocals and after 4 hrs I still had no clue what was happening as I could not distinguish between any characters making the listen impossible to follow. This book literally gave me a migraine. No one should have to put that much effort into an audio book to try and figure out what is going on. I can not comment on the story as I had to put all my energy into just trying to figure out what person was speaking. In doing so, I found myself not really listening to a word that was being said. In summary:
Too dramatic
Impossible to tell characters apart
Horrible narrator
Buy if you want a migraine
If you read... Get the book and don't waste your time.

Narrator is Horrendous!
What did you love best about The 6th Extinction?
Good story. Suspenceful.
Would you recommend The 6th Extinction to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes. Good story.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator could have given a darn. He reads it like he wants to get home for dinner. Good story wasted on poor narrator.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
A different reader
Would you be willing to try another one of Christian Baskous’s performances?
No never. It seems like he moves away from tge microphone he doesn't finish a kit of his words. Worl instead of world etc. it's fiery irritating. Che goes soft and whispery the speaks emphatically completely out of context. Just awful.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Added irritation. I returned it ubfinished

Great story, irritating narrator
The story is terrific. It's back to James Rollins normal standards, whereas his last couple had faltered somewhat. The new narrator is probably just fine for other books, but a little to over the top for this story, and detracts rather than adds to the action. I find myself constantly pulled out of the action by his voice, or his accent. His women's voices aren't great, and considering a great many of the major characters in this story are women, it can be gateing. Same goes for accents.
Listen to the sample. The narrator will either drive you crazy, or won't bother you at all. Just make sure you know before you purchase.

STORY OR NARRATOR?
Slogged through 25 chapters but that's it. When the narrator didn't put me to sleep, the lack of action and scientific details did. Have been a big fan of James Rollins' Sigma series; however, will wait for other reviews of future books instead of pre-ordering them. :(

Gruesome
This will be my last attempt at a James Rollins book, and it will be returned to Audible. Why?
1. The story-line is at least tripartite, and any of them could easily be a standalone book of it's own. This was true of the last Rollins book also, The Bone Labyrinth. It makes the plot difficult to follow. It began to lose me about 3 hours in, but I persevered until it got gruesome.
2. Simply too many grisly details that seem gratuitous. I had to quit when the park ranger was given an experimental drug that would reduce her to an ape. I didn't much like the what they did to Nikko the dog either.
3. The narrator does terrible women, as so many men do. His men aren't much better. His voice began to grate on me.
I didn't finish the book. I don't even care enough to read the final chapter to find out the end. Can't recommend it either. Definitely not for the reader who prefers plot and characterization to gratuitous and unusual violence.

Amazing awesome cool
I had read this book years ago and listen to it now brought it all further to life! The story telling is amazing and so cool! The heroes are heroic :-) as they should be and they are so much more! There is always one or two of them that I can see myself in and there are always new ideas for me to grow into! Thanks a bunch!
