Publisher's Summary

1794. Lieutenant John Pearce is caught between a feuding trio of admirals. One puts him in a position of danger while another asks him to undertake a hazardous commission in order to protect his friends, the Pelicans.

Meanwhile, Pearce is also trying to construct a perjury case against Admiral Ralph Barclay. Barclay's own wife has turned against him, but by law she cannot testify against her husband. Her cowardly nephew has become a pawn in the Admiral's game, the objective of which is to finally silence Pearce.

After returning to France, Pearce has finally got the evidence he needs to nail Barclay. But the siege is coming to a climax and time is running out for Pearce...

Donache’s minor characters painted to perfection

Number 5 in the story of John Pearce. Unlike most of the Royal Navy stories from the age of sail, Pearce is a reluctant hero, motivated by justice for his friends. Even though there are almost no limits to Pearce’s arrogance in the face of authority, somehow he comes out covered in glory, unwittingly allowing his bravery and intelligence to win the day. The minor characters shine, so beautifully written. A wonderful series of books to listen to or read by David Donache, a master of his craft, excelling at weaving an intricate plot around historically accurate events.
