Publisher's Summary

Making sense of men's evolution... The stages of development describe the lifelong process by which a man's sense of self evolves. Predictable and unavoidable, these stages determine what men live for and what they can't live without. Understanding the differences between knights, princes, and kings is critical for success in romantic relationships, raising sons, and working effectively with men.

In this intimate conversation you'll learn:

  • What men can and cannot provide at each stage
  • How to avoid the tragic mistakes women make
  • What's really happening during a "mid-life crisis"
  • What makes a man "ready" for relationship, marriage, and children
  • The importance of adventure to men of all ages

Plus much more!

Wow, I love this

One of the most enlightening offerings on the journey of men I’ve heard yet, and I’ve been exploring for over eight years now. Bravo and I’m looking forward to more from this author and her organization!

Very Good Folk Wisdom. No Sources.

When it comes to anything psychology related, I am a stickler for a good sources or good science. this book had none of that, so I have to put it in the category of both wisdom.

the author narrator does talk about her research, but what that seems to mean is her experiences working with and speaking to men. in the talk on women, she does mention that a couple of doctors have verified some of her ideas, so she's not too far off the ballpark.

I would be very interested in getting a psychologist opinion of what she speaks of, or even a neurologist or biologist since some of these stages are more than merely psychological but also drift into more big picture behavioral.

regardless of the sourcing issues, a lot of it does fit in with common sense and what I know about Psychology from both formal and informal learning. I would say that rather than trying to view this in a scientific or psychological lens, he could instead be viewed as a helpful framework sir which to understand the stages of male development.

And keep in mind, this isn't child development which is what psychology tends to focus on a little too much, we're talking men from Young adulthood all the way to the midlife crisis and the stage after it. if you are going through a midlife crisis or are in a relationship with someone going through it, I would highly suggest reading this book. even if you don't, keep in mind that often it's a crisis for everyone around you. for a man, this can be a spiritual journey era in their life.

I will go over the four stages that misses Armstrong covers in the book briefly. she Taps into our Universal appreciation for folk tales and myths with her titles, something I can appreciate. so there's the page, which like in medieval times aspires to become a knight. the night is the man who has just attained adulthood and is trying to sample the world and find his place in it. this stage is characterized by, from what I understand, a search for adventure and fun. what the author narrator didn't quite emphasize but I think is actually going on, is that the night is searching for his place in society, in the world, and looking for a way of thinking that is most in line with his temperament and who he wants to become. this is often accompanied by a search for mentorship, which nowadays is often found online. I would encourage usually watching successful people give you advice online does not grant that back and forth communication. the next element is the prince. what a prince is trying to do is establish their kingdom. the prince Narrows down on one career, one approach to life, and starts working hard at it. the author also gives advice for women who happened to find themselves in relationships with the various stages, and so jumping back briefly tonight, she says nights typically do not commit especially until they get into the prince stage, unless they are part of a culture where men are expected to commit younger. Prince will commit, but a woman might feel that they are competing with the kingdom that the prince is trying to establish, be that a career or a business or anything else that is allowing them to provide. she has a side chapter on the midlife crisis and how it's something that shouldn't be worried about too much, she warns women that commitment during this period in time isn't quite the same because the part of a man which commits she calls the self, and she comments that the self is basically missing an action and that is the whole reason for the crisis. the final stage is king, and it begins on the other side of the midlife crisis. keep in mind that she says the midlife crisis begins around 12 years after the prince stage and particularly 12 years after the prince begins to settle on and set his nose to the grindstone in building a kingdom that can provide for his family. so on the other end, the king is what we used to call a real man.

the king is the man who is sure of himself. he will rarely venture out from the things he gained expertise in and then codified into his identity during The Prince and midlife crisis times in his life. if a woman is dating an older man who has entered the king stage, which Armstrong says she's seen anywhere from 38 to 55 and obviously everyone older since this is the last stage, she should be worn that he will not happily, or perhaps not at all, provide outside of his domain of expertise. a king knows what he is capable of giving properly and he is not going to do a shoddy job of providing what he has not been working on for the first half of his life. she says that a woman who can find a king is a recipe for the happily ever after. there's also a wizened type of King which she calls the elder, and they are known for being a little quieter with their advice, but also for having the best advice. she encourages anyone who encounters the Elder King to entreat them for wisdom.

overall, I'm satisfied with this book I suggest that anybody who enjoys less scientific approaches to human psychology and human development and even human relationships, since she does talk about those throughout, definitely check this out. that includes you, students of the various schools of psychoanalysis.

a final word, we also get to hear from actual men discussing how they are going through the stages, or how the stages were for them in the past. these appear to be clippings from question and answer. in talks that Armstrong has given the past. I have found all of them to be illuminating, and they do give us a sort of experience based case study form of support for her ideas.

I'm going to give this a 7.8 out of 10, and again despite my skepticism I was impressed by this kind of tarot card approach. (For those who don't know tarot cards have face cards like regular playing cards, but instead of Jack queen king it is page, knight, queen, king. some decks replace the page and tonight for Prince and princess. so I mean that she literally is using the same sort of symbolic imagery as these cards.) as you can see by the audiobooks length, she is not wasting our time, and I think the audiobook is definitely worth the ticket price.

What if ...?

I did enjoy this book, and helped me understand my Dad. That was helpful as it is a strained relationship.
I'm in my mid 50's and divorced after 18 years of marriage with a closeted gay man.
My children are launched, I'm very confused and the men I encounter talk of sex or marriage within an hour of our meeting. What's with that?

Amazing!

This book helped me clarify what my partner is going through. It relieved me and made me feel less alienated. This is common. This should be talked about more. Simply amazing!!!
