Story
The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

We humans tend to get in our own way time and time again - whether it comes to not speaking up for ourselves, going back to bad romantic partners, our umpteenth diet, or engaging in any of a range of bad habits we just can’t seem to shake. In Rewire, renowned psychotherapist Richard O’Connor, PhD, reveals why our bad habits die so hard. We have two brains - one a thoughtful, conscious, deliberative self, and the other an automatic self that does most of the work without our attention.

Story
Why does it feel so natural to be compassionate and kind to those we care about - yet so hard to treat ourselves the same way? "Our culture teaches us to use self-criticism for motivation and to build self-esteem by constantly measuring ourselves against everyone else," says Dr. Kristin Neff. "We need to re-learn the essential skill of being genuinely nurturing and supportive toward ourselves."

Publisher's Summary
"For the last 20 years I've dedicated my personal and professional life to the importance of self-care by teaching from my own experience," writes Cheryl Richardson. "In the past, I've sacrificed my health and my relationships for work, given to others at the expense of my own needs, and watched my dreams slip through the cracks of a busy life. As a result, I've learned a lot about what it takes to put an end to the madness.... From years of personal experience, as well as coaching great men and women, I've come to understand that selfishness leads to selflessness. When we care deeply for ourselves, we naturally begin to care for others - our families, our friends, our greater global community, and the environment - in a healthier and more effective way. We tell the truth. We make choices from love instead of guilt and obligation. And we soon realize that we're all connected and that our individual actions affect a greater whole."
This updated edition of Cheryl's best-selling handbook The Art of Extreme Self-Care brings her message home to listeners with a new section about forming and running a successful support group, as well as updated resources so listeners stay inspired and motivated. Her practical, action-oriented program outlines 12 strategies to transform your life one month at a time, each one challenging you to alter one behavior that's blocking your path. Chapters include "End the Legacy of Deprivation", "Find Your Passion", "The Absolute No List", and "Does That Anger Taste Good?" (Hint: it really doesn't.)

What a kick in the pants
I went to a psychic for a reading and the first thing she told me is why are you not caring for yourself! I told her everything I was doing and she replied back you are not taking care of yourself! Then I receive an email from Hay House with this book in it and I decided it's time to read so I understand what it is I am not doing. I read through the book and immediately found many areas where I am taking care of others but not taking care of myself! Reading through the book and reading the book difficult conversations previously I began having those conversations with people. I explained to people that I have no problems helping them out when I have time. I had to explain to other people that there will no longer be two-hour car drives home. I also learned to avoid conversations that I just didn't need to be part of. I've also stopped playing peacemaker if a grown woman at work wants to throw a temper tantrum like a two-year-old child let her! I simply have begun to walk away. I loved this book so much I have been hiding it to friends to read! I strongly suggest you read this book cover to cover. Then go through it again monthly to get the most impact! Plus Hay House has a great online course you can take as well!

First Edition is Better
I LOVED the first edition of this book - it changed my life. When I learned that Cheryl Richardson was updating it, I was so excited to hear what new bits of wisdom she had to offer. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed. First off, I found that the things that I felt were most powerful were minimized or removed all together from this version, and it felt like there was very little new content. She added some of the typical warnings about social media and such, but none of the new content was really new or at all insightful for me. If you already read the first edition, I wouldn't recommend investing in this one. If you are really interested, I would say that it is worth your while to look for the first edition - I believe you will get more out of it.
