Publisher's Summary

Best-selling author and award-winning adventurer Ross Edgley has been studying the art of resilience for years, applying all he has learned to become the first person in history to swim all the way round Great Britain, breaking multiple world records along the way. Now, Ross turns his attention to mental strength and Stoicism.

Ross Edgley famously ran a marathon pulling a 1.4-tonne car and climbed a rope the height of Everest (8,848 m), after living with Yamabushi warrior monks in Japan and partaking in Shamanic pain rituals with fire ants in the Amazon jungle. On his epic 1,780-mile journey around Great Britain, which lasted 157 days, Ross swam through giant jellyfish, arctic storms, ‘haunted’ whirlpools and polluted shipping lanes, going so hard, and so fast, his tongue fell apart.

Ross’ previous book, The World’s Fittest Book, was a Sunday Times number one best seller and explored the science of physical fitness. Now, in The Art of Resilience, Ross uses his swim experience and other amazing endurance feats, where he managed to overcome seemingly insurmountable pain, hardship and adversity, to study the performance of extreme athletes, military and fitness specialists and psychologists to uncover the secrets of mental fitness and explore the concept of resilience, persistence, valour and a disciplined mind-set in overcoming adversity. This groundbreaking work represents a paradigm shift in what we thought the human body and mind were capable of and will give you a blueprint to become a tougher, more resilient and ultimately better human - whatever the challenge you face.

His knowledge of physiology and nutrition is second to none.. theorist said it couldnt be done, but hes a practioner and but the theories to rest.

A pleasure to listen to

I remember hearing of Ross’s journey on social media when the swim was taking place. When he told his story on The Joe Rogan experience following the swim, I was fascinated by his tale and his enthusiasm. As a man who swam competitively for more than a decade, it’s not the swim that kept me entertained (although it certainly did impress me beyond words), it was Ross’s puppy-like enthusiasm and tenacity at which he completed his journey. Deeply philosophical and intelligent in his approach, Ross and his crew’s personal journey follows in the footsteps of so many heroes and brave-souled adventurers and is a testament of human will. Truly one of the best physical and mental achievements I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

Great writer and narrator

Loved it, would highly recommend! Small section roughly in the middle goes a little too much into details and drags on a little too long about swimming technique, but otherwise a great read!

A journey for the ages

This was an excellent book l, that was well narrated by Ross regarding his own story. Research and explanations are used throughout to provide a scientific basis of decisions that were made on the adventure. All the other bits of fun and adventure are added in too. I have listened to podcasts he has done and his other book and this is by far the best book. Sometimes the basic explanations of physical activity science are tedious if you understand these too a higher level. But all round a very good book.

Mind & Body Science meets storytelling

This book is one of the best books I’ve ever read. And I read a lot of books. Is someone who is an entrepreneur and my spiritual journey of business, they also being a fitness guy, trying to push the boundaries of my body and practice mental toughness and all fronts, Facebook puts together the art of Stoic sports science, As well as so many other aspect of mental toughness and principles of what to do when your body and mind are pushed to the limit. Best thing about it is, Ross Is an amazing storyteller, and also turns up in amazing performer. He read this so well That listening to it became more kind of like a show than listening to an audio book. Finally I think this book is a must for anyone and everyone who’s ever tried or is considering trying #75Hard – the mental toughness program by Andy Frisella, that I personally finished just a month prior to coming about this book. Thank you Ross Edgley for an incredible story and inspiration to push ourselves to the limits and live our best lives! 🙌
