Publisher's Summary

Best-selling author and award-winning adventurer Ross Edgley has been studying the art of resilience for years, applying all he has learned to become the first person in history to swim all the way round Great Britain, breaking multiple world records along the way. Now, Ross turns his attention to mental strength and Stoicism.

Ross Edgley famously ran a marathon pulling a 1.4-tonne car and climbed a rope the height of Everest (8,848 m), after living with Yamabushi warrior monks in Japan and partaking in Shamanic pain rituals with fire ants in the Amazon jungle. On his epic 1,780-mile journey around Great Britain, which lasted 157 days, Ross swam through giant jellyfish, arctic storms, ‘haunted’ whirlpools and polluted shipping lanes, going so hard, and so fast, his tongue fell apart.

Ross’ previous book, The World’s Fittest Book, was a Sunday Times number one best seller and explored the science of physical fitness. Now, in The Art of Resilience, Ross uses his swim experience and other amazing endurance feats, where he managed to overcome seemingly insurmountable pain, hardship and adversity, to study the performance of extreme athletes, military and fitness specialists and psychologists to uncover the secrets of mental fitness and explore the concept of resilience, persistence, valour and a disciplined mind-set in overcoming adversity. This groundbreaking work represents a paradigm shift in what we thought the human body and mind were capable of and will give you a blueprint to become a tougher, more resilient and ultimately better human - whatever the challenge you face.

A pleasure to listen to

I remember hearing of Ross’s journey on social media when the swim was taking place. When he told his story on The Joe Rogan experience following the swim, I was fascinated by his tale and his enthusiasm. As a man who swam competitively for more than a decade, it’s not the swim that kept me entertained (although it certainly did impress me beyond words), it was Ross’s puppy-like enthusiasm and tenacity at which he completed his journey.

Deeply philosophical and intelligent in his approach, Ross and his crew’s personal journey follows in the footsteps of so many heroes and brave-souled adventurers and is a testament of human will. Truly one of the best physical and mental achievements I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.

Great writer and narrator

Loved it, would highly recommend! Small section roughly in the middle goes a little too much into details and drags on a little too long about swimming technique, but otherwise a great read!

Great Inspiration

As someone who loves swimming and also Into open water swimming this was fascinating to listen too. I throughly enjoyed the humor and way the book was written. It was well organized and explained very well! Makes me want to go swim around Great Britain except maybe without the jelly fish 🤣

Great book

A great athletic feat accomplished. Although I enjoy hearing about the suffering of elite athletes during these grueling events. I love how he kept a joyous attitude and made the trek around Great Britain a lot of fun. How his resilience was from a lifetime of pushing himself physically and mentally and intense study all combined to continue showing us what’s possible for humanity.

Amazing story

I followed his progress live during the swim and was amazed at his remarkable achievement swimming around Great Britain. The Art of Resilience puts a unique perspective of Ross’s point of view and how if you put your mind to it, you could achieve anything!
