Publisher's Summary

The words held within this audiobook, where written over two and a half thousand years ago, ring just as true today as they did in fifth century BC China. Best-selling author and master storyteller James Clavell (Shōgun) brought The Art of War to greater prominence in the West in the 1980s and showed how the book’s instruction was applicable on a smaller scale and could be used for personal betterment. Clavell’s wonderfully evocative foreword and helpful notes throughout the text guide the listener through preparations and battle plans, correct use of weapons and knowing when to fight - and when not to fight.

With a deep understanding of both strategy and human nature, this military treatise illustrates the fine craft of knowing one’s enemy and oneself. From military officers to CEOs to those simply looking to be more powerful in their own life, The Art of War has become required reading for anyone seeking a path of success through the modern world.

Overrated

You hear of this book everywhere. They make it seem like it’s that applicable to real life but it really isn’t without a lot of interpretation. The 48 Laws of power is a much better book with the same values.

this is a commentary on the Art of War

I chose this as my first audible book... within minutes I was disappointed... this is a commentary on the book with the occasional reading from the book... I just wanted to listen to the book.

Great Classic!

Great book with good examples on each lesson. it can be hard to tell when it transitions from passage to example though.

Additional stories intertwined are great

Excellent version Art of War, however, the advice in the forward that these rules are perfect for all battles even the battle between the sexes and that everyone should be compelled by law to study AOW was ridiculously arrogant even in 1980s. Just skip that foolishness and enjoy Sun Tzu.

Excellent Book on Strategy

Very dense, but also very useful. I will probably re-listen to this book regularly to remind myself of the various great points. Luckily, the book is short enough where that isn't too much to ask 😉

Fascinating

this was one of the better interpretations, in my opinion. I recommend this audiobook wholeheartedly.

Not much wisdom

I thought listening to an abridged version would offer the wisdom without the bulk but so think it eliminated anything valuable.

Glad I listened to it, but not the best "read"

Interesting, but written over 2,000 years ago, so a modern interpretation would have been better.

Shameful Narrative

Mr. Vance comes off extremely pompous with his “history” lesson before his performance. To make the assumptions that neither World Wars should have taken place had the participants read and studied The Art Of War before they started makes them appear to be no more than school yard fights. And he certainly knows nothing about this book being taught to the United States military where it is actually taught extensively. His assertions come off quite liberal and as a person who has never seen actual combat.

I have read several versions and translations thus far because of the way it has been translated from the original. Sadly this version has been tainted by Mr. Vances viewpoints. That said there are other Audible selections of The Art of War that may serve you better.
