Publisher's Summary

Based on the characters created by Dorothy L. Sayers.

The recovery of the magnificent gem in Lord Attenbury's dazzling heirloom launched a shell-shocked young aristocrat on his career as a detective in 1921. Thirty years later, a happily married Lord Peter has just shared the secrets of that mystery with his wife, the detective novelist Harriet Vane. Suddenly, the new Lord Attenbury—grandson of Lord Peter’s first client—seeks his help to prove who owns the emeralds. As Harriet and Peter contemplate the changes that the war has wrought on English society, Peter, who always cherished the liberties of a younger son, faces the unwanted prospect of ending up the Duke of Denver after all.

Lovely

Enjoyed this. Author Paton Walsh does write well, can hear Sayers voice throughout. I have always enjoyed Edward Petherbridge's performances as Lord Peter.

Excellent. Perhaps better than Sayers

Wasn't sure I would like this but I really enjoyed it! Ms Walsh has such a good job, perhaps even better than Dorothy L Sayers. At first I wasn't sure about the narrator because you couldn't tell much difference between the different voices, but once I got used to him he was really really good! And just fit the characters so well. I recommend this series of books!

not a great plot

Don't have to know Persian to detail etched quote . would have solved whole plot.

Disappointing Lord Peter Mystery

I enjoyed The Late Scholar and was looking forward to Ms. Walsh's version of The Attenbury Emeralds story. It started out ok but quickly became a dialogue of reminiscences and by chapter 8 I had to give it up. Disappointing as the author certainly can write and has captured the characters of Peter and Harriet well I think. Edward Petherbridge, narrating, has played the role of Wimsey and I enjoyed his performances. But he seems a bit depressed with this story. Perhaps I should have persevered and read on but I have put the book aside.
