Story
Instead of being merely the receiver of the parents' psychological and spiritual legacy, children function as ushers of the parents' development. Parents unwittingly pass on an inheritance of psychological pain and emotional shallowness. To handle the behavior that results, traditional books on parenting abound with clever techniques for control and quick fixes for dysfunction. In Dr. Shefali Tsabary's conscious approach to parenting, however, children serve as mirrors of their parents' forgotten self.

Story
In Hold On to Your Kids, Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Maté explore the phenomenon of peer orientation: the troubling tendency of children and youth to look to their peers for direction - for a sense of right and wrong, for values, identity and codes of behavior. But peer orientation undermines family cohesion, poisons the school atmosphere, and fosters an aggressively hostile and sexualized youth culture. It provides a powerful explanation for schoolyard bullying and youth violence; it is an escalating trend that has never been adequately described or contested.

One of the very best scientific predictors for how any child turns out - in terms of happiness, academic success, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships - is whether at least one adult in their life has consistently shown up for them. In an age of scheduling demands and digital distractions, showing up for your child might sound like a tall order. But as best-selling authors Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson reassuringly explain, it doesn’t take a lot of time, energy, or money. Instead, showing up means offering a quality of presence.

Baffling and beloved, with the capacity to go from joy to frustration in seconds, young children are some of the most misunderstood people on the planet. Parents and caregivers struggle with these little ones, who are known for their extreme behaviour, from tantrums, resistance, and aggression to separation anxiety, bedtime protests, and not listening. The key to understanding youngsters lies in realizing that their challenging behaviour is not personal, nor is it a disorder or deficit.

Publisher's Summary
"Parents...you will be wowed and awed by [Dr. Shefali]." (Oprah Winfrey)
New from the New York Times best-selling author of The Conscious Parent comes a radically transformative plan that shows parents how to raise children to be their best, truest selves.
What if...?
What if I told you that you can put an end to all of your parenting struggles?
That you can learn to parent without fear or anxiety?
That you can end conflict with your children?
That you can create close and connected relationships within your family?
Would you accept this invitation to a revolution in parenting?
We all have the capacity to raise children who are highly resilient and emotionally connected. However, many of us are unable to because we are blinded by modern misconceptions of parenting and our own inner limitations. In The Awakened Family, I show you how you can cultivate a relationship with your children so they can thrive; moreover, you can be transformed to a state of greater calm, compassion, and wisdom as well.
This book will take you on a journey to transcending your fears and illusions around parenting and help you become the parent you always wanted to be: fully present and conscious. It will arm you with practical, hands-on strategies and real-life examples from my experience as a parent and clinical psychologist that show the extraordinary power of being a conscious parent.
Everyone in your family is ready to be awakened.
Will you take this journey with me?
- Shefali
What the critics say
"Stop struggling, parents. Here is the key to relaxing into your family and into your parenting.... [Tsabary] has a new book releasing us all from the stresses of 'making' the perfect child." (The Washington Post)
"I want to give this book to everyone I know who is a parent, a grandparent, a child, a grown-up child...everyone. It's not only a primer for the kind of family life we all long for, it's also a guide to being human - to living with more ease, more love, more joy." (Elizabeth Lesser, cofounder of Omega Institute and author of Broken Open and Marrow)
"Shefali Tsabary shines the light of wisdom on the most enlightened aspect of parenting: discovering a child's individual personhood and purpose, and nurturing the path to its fulfillment." (Michael Bernard Beckwith, author of Life Visioning)

My entire perspective of parenting is changed
I'm currently taking applied behavioral analysis and Dr.Tsabary's perspective on how to interact with your children (and people in general) is the mindfulness version of this. Remove the need for punishment, use reinforcement as a valuable tool to help shape/guide their behaviors, use natural consequences and teach replacement behavior. Treat your children as people (because they are) and take into consideration how your emotions and behavior are affecting them. Children are not property we have the permission to unload our baggage onto, treating them however we want-they are little human beings we have created who deserves our mutual respect and whom we were responsible to care for.

Not very helpful
Full disclosure, I only listened to the first 3 hours of the book. I kept waiting for it to go somewhere. The Author makes a lot of presumptions about the reader; specifically that they are very much not self-aware at all. I felt like someone was talking to me as a 5th grader before I had made many of the common emotional and developmental breakthroughs we all go through. If I was that far back in my development I would never have decided I was ready to raise children.
I went into this book looking for good, factual, science-based information to help better raise my daughter and her shortly arriving sister. Instead I got a lot of opinion, a lot of metaphysical terminology, and the scope of all information was limited to her anecdotes. The anecdotes themselves had fairly unbelievable dialog based on the given age of the kids she was working with. The irony was that, in these dialogs, the kids at age 12 were infinitely more self aware than their parents at age 30+ yet the premise was that you as a parent were hampered as a child by your parents and never developed these self-realizations. The anecdotes may have all been real, but they really felt unauthentic.
It's entirely possible that her opinions are correct but as she was a PhD I was really hoping to hear about findings from a much larger base of study, of biology, chemistry, the true underlying components of our bonds with our children. That didn't seem to be there. Maybe it was in the later chapters but 3 hours in and it didn't seem to be going anywhere in that direction.

Highly recommend all parents read this before their children turn 6 and re read when they are just entering teen years!!! Fluffy and screams "new age".
Any additional comments?
I am a huge Eckhart Tolle fan, and reread his books regularly. I am very interested in mindfulness topics. I am a new father. I thought this book would resonate with me, but I just found it way too full of new-age babble, and not actual science. The fact the author is a doctor made me think the book would be more substantive and researched, and less preachy speculation. To give you a sense -- each chapter ends with a "poem". Perhaps that says enough right there. (By the way, I love poems, but do not think this book is the place for them.)

Disappointing for an evidenced based review
if you want to read a book about parenting with well founded research and data, look elsewhere. I was annoyed by the first sentence, and it didn't get better. The author just uses analogy and discussions of "true self" to describe topics that actually have strong research based evidentiary support.
If the scientific method and talk of research makes you uncomfortable, then you may like this book. I personally felt it to boarder on insulting my intelligence.

Let's change the cycle of disconnection
I love having to rethink an idea I thought was my own. This book gives you access to a paradigm shift. I'm doing it because I am aware of what I am doing.

Amazing book!
The best book in parenting ever! A must read for everyone! Help me to have a better relationship with myself, raise my inner child in order to be a better parent for my daughters. Very grateful that I have found her! The world would be a much better place if all the people would read and apply her work.

Skip this book
This is full of psychological babble. It is full of vaporous dribble. If you feel you need this kind of advice and explanation of behaviors then you are really in deep trouble. Use your common sense when raising your children and you will be an excellent parent.

Transformed my concepts of patenting
This book is a simple yet powerful approach to shifting everything I thought was the " right way " to parent. Through this loving and conscious method I have already seen changes in myself and therefore how I patent in this new radical zen way! Thank you!

Every parent should read. SO helpful!
The author's ideas just make sense - and the ones I've tried out so far have all worked. It helped me wrap my mind and heart around new ways to connect with my children.
