À propos de cet audio

The best-selling novel that inspired Mervyn LeRoy's classic horror film about the little girl who can get away with anything - even murder.

There's something special about eight-year-old Rhoda Penmark. With her carefully plaited hair and her sweet cotton dresses, she's the very picture of old-fashioned innocence. But when their neighborhood suffers a series of terrible accidents, her mother begins to wonder: Why do bad things seem to happen when little Rhoda is around?

Originally published in 1954, William March's final novel was an instant best seller and National Book Award finalist before it was adapted for the stage and made into a 1956 film. The Bad Seed is an indelible portrait of an evil that wears an innocent face, one which still resonates in popular culture today.

Loved it, great narrator, used different voices for different characters! Favorite line, "You still have Rhoda!", yikes!

This 1954 William March novel follows a mother ('Christine Penmark') coming to the realization that her 8-year-old daughter, 'Rhoda', is a clinical sociopath and murderer. The book is a little over-the-top but well-plotted & paced and capably written.
Less fortunately, the book *feels* like a 1950s effort (private finishing schools and negro manservants are integral to the plot but don't even exist as a thing anymore, for example). I further appreciated the contemplation of the heritability of psychopathy (i.e. did I pass evil on to my kid?) but this book was glaringly written before the discovery of DNA. I enjoyed the often chilling book but was far from blown away.

As to presentation: Reader Elizabeth Wiley turns in a subpar performance - solidly professional, mind you - but characterized by often immature-sounding timbre/cadence and overdramatic voice-acting. Despite the subject matter, the book came across as incongruously lighthearted/semi-sardonic.

Altogether, 'The Bad Seed' merits 5.5 stars out of 10. It was a fine way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons for free.. but not worth your Credit when it leaves the "included with your subscription" catalog.

A Touch Dated

This book is a chilling classic. The narrator is horrible....whiney and grating voice. If you can get past that, I would recommend

Great book, lousy narrator
