Publisher's Summary

Max Freeman's old life ended on a night that will haunt him forever. The night he killed a twelve-year-old child in self-defense in a Philadelphia shootout. The night he stopped being a cop. Now he lives a solitary existence on the edge of the Florida Everglades, where he answers to no one but the demons that eat away at his conscience. When he finds the corpse of a child beside an ancient river and another child goes missing, all eyes turn to Freeman. The ex-cop, driven by his old habits and the memories of that long-ago Philadelphia midnight, knows that he has no choice but to hunt down the seemingly unstoppable murderer himself. An electrifying story of crime, punishment, and one man's personal redemption played out against a backdrop of wild natural beauty in conflict with the modern urban world.

Satisfactory "Free" Mystery-Thriller

Jonathon King develops an interest-piquing character: burnt-out/PTSD-afflicted former Philadelphia PD officer 'Max Freeman' - living in isolation in a backward Florida Everglades community. Freeman - spending his time fishing & just contemplating life - discovers the corpse of a child and finds himself ensnared in the investigation of a mysterious serial killer.
On the positive side of the ledger, King writes with capable vocabulary/prose, true-to-life dialogue, and mind's-eye vivid description. Less fortunately, the protagonist's flashbacks to cases and events prior to his breakdown are faaaar more interesting than the central case in this story. This particular set of crimes is actually pretty uninteresting.

As to presentation: reader Nick Sullivan's diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are professional - but he reads too slowly (listen at 1.10X for the most "natural" listening experience). Sullivan also does a remarkable job portraying a character with a stutter, but makes a couple of questionable decisions interpreting others (the voice-acting is variably successful).
In toto, the presentation is "adequate" (Blackstone Audio Inc. could have gotten similar results with a narrator different from this "hit & miss" performer).

Altogether, ''The Blue Edge Of Midnight' rates a respectable 7.5 stars out of 10. As a 'Plus' selection, it was an enjoyable distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons. If you can get it likewise, Do Not Hesitate. Should they ask for a Credit, however, better options beckon.
