Story
A young detective is out for a jog on a snowy winter morning. Then she sees something terrible: a murder in the park, sudden and inexplicable. A woman has been killed by a passing hooded cyclist. It’s just DCI Craig Gillard’s luck that he’s on duty. The body is that of Tanvi Roy, one of the richest women in Britain and matriarch of a food empire. With a tangled web of family and business contacts and jealousies, Gillard’s job just got even more complex. As he delves deeper into the Roy family, it’s clear that everything is not as it seems.

Late on midsummer's night there is a splash in the river Thames. A body is found on an island, asphyxiated and laced with strange markings. For DCI Craig Gillard it's a baffling case. The victim's identity is elusive, clues are scarce and every witness has something to hide. Meanwhile one of Britain's deadliest serial killers is finally up for parole after a deal to reveal the location of two missing bodies. Story
A large country mansion. A locked room. A gruesome murder. Russian oligarch Alexander Volkov has invited 1,000 guests to a party at his palatial Surrey residence, Westgrave Hall. But while giving a private tour of the library, a gunman kills Volkov, wounding his ex-wife and slaying her new beau. Nothing makes sense to DCI Craig Gillard. In the blood-spattered crime scene there are no forensic traces of anyone else involved, CCTV shows no one entered or left the library, and everyone seems to have an alibi.

Story
On the tree-lined banks of Surrey’s River Wey, a decaying corpse is dug up by workmen in the middle of an Anglo-Saxon burial site. His modern dental fillings show that this is no Dark Age corpse. DCI Craig Gillard is called in, but the body’s condition makes identification difficult. One man, however, seems to fit the bill: Ozzy Blanchard, a contractor employed by the same water firm doing the digging who disappeared six months ago. But then an X-ray of the corpse throws the investigation into turmoil. The deeper Gillard digs, the more shocking truths he will uncover.

In the peace and tranquility of the woods at Pinehills on a Saturday afternoon, a mobile phone begins to ring. The phone belongs to DC Smith, and it isn't unusual that the call is from Kings Lake Central police station; what is unusual is the fact that he seems to be the subject of an investigation rather than taking part in one. What can the links be between a prisoner's violent death in another county, the disappearance of two teenagers, and the highest profile case in Kings Lake for many years?

Publisher's Summary
DCI Craig Gillard will be pushed to his limits. But will he break? It seems like a routine disappearance, a case of musician’s stage fright. As a senior detective, Craig Gillard isn’t sure why he’s even involved. Until it turns out the woman’s father is the German minister of justice, and the British home secretary is on the case, too.
But nothing about the case is simple. How does a woman on a train simply vanish? What do you do when a trail runs cold and the pressure is on?
Before long the perpetrator has another target: DCI Gillard himself. What if the detective isn’t just running the case but is part of it? The victim merely a lure for a bigger fish.
The answer is under the bridge. The chilling setting for the biggest challenge of his life.
The latest DCI Gillard Crime Thriller is a knockout: fast and completely gripping, perfect for fans of Stuart Macbride, Mark Billingham and Robert Bryndza.

Body under the Bridge
Satisfying story, although I find the female characters not well portrayed. Had hoped that Sam (or any one of the female officers) would show the strong independence that appeared in the first book. Parts of the story seemed contrived, but overall, an engaging listen.

Finished in one listen
Best so far in series. The plot was so complicated and the various chases so suspense filled that my heart is still pounding. Ingenious and written with spare eloquence. York's performance gives full life to Louth's outstanding prose. A truly loathsome trickster, con artist, sex criminal and killer challenges Craig and all his colleagues to a deadly race against time and technology, with Sam's and other women's lives at stake. Tiny peeve: I wish Craig would stop hating his aunt's innocent cats. Otherwise, he's the perfect crime novel hero.

This book is just too much for me.
The first part's criminal procedural does perk along on its tight copland way with the complex mystery of a young woman's disapearance. It is the over the top last part of the boot hat proves so annoying. Dreaming up a horrible ending, and did I add -long- long- long way to the end?

Good, if unbelievable
Late in the book an investigator makes a comment ....What is the point of something so elaborate. I found myself thinking that long before. I enjoyed the book overall. It starts as a straightforward, and interesting missing person case but morphs into a overly complex kidnapping and revenge plot. The complex nature of the villain's plan borders on the ridiculous. The villain somehow manages 5 or 6 separate seductions, I lost track...multiple identities and technological wizardry. Many of these connections cross into the lives of several members of the police department. The likelihood it could all be pulled off without getting caught is beyond unbelievable. It could have been a much better book if he kept focus on an investigation of the missing girls and left out the revenge plot.

Five books into this series..
And the best way to describe it (compared to the rest of the genre) is like bowling with bumpers.
Fortunately, that can still be enjoyable. Not as enjoyable to be honest. But still worth the time spent. And the characters in this series make it worth the time.
