About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Every parent wants their child to be happy and every parent wants to avoid screwing them up. But how do you achieve that?

In this absorbing, clever and funny book, renowned psychotherapist Philippa Perry tells us what really matters and what behaviour it is important to avoid - the vital dos and don'ts of parenting.

Instead of mapping out the 'perfect' plan, Perry offers a big-picture look at the elements that lead to good parent-child relationships. This refreshing, judgement-free book will help you to:

  • Understand how your own upbringing may affect your parenting
  • Accept that you will make mistakes and learn what you can do about them
  • Break negative cycles and patterns
  • Handle your own and your child's feelings
  • Understand what different behaviours communicate

Full of sage and sane advice, this is the book that every parent will want to listen and every child will wish their parents had.

Great insights and useful tools for communicating with children. Skills taught in the book are not only applicable to raising children, but also essential skills in our daily lives.

Highly recommended to everyone, not just parents.

Cringy voices

Overall there’s a lot of good info here but a couple annoying things.

When she does the kid voice, I want to crash my car into a building. So terrible.

When she talks about sleep training being harmful she lays it on so think and repeats the same message over and over. Say your peace and give us advice on what to do about it and how to repair if we have done that.

Every parent should read this

I always thought I wing being a parent. Reading a few books have really helped. It's not about some secret to get your kids to do what you want. It's about creating a beyond and not letting your hang ups from your childhood effect that.

it's a gentle parenting book

I loved listening to this book, I got a lot of really good ideas from it and I feel a lot more comfortable as a parent now. I feel like I have more understanding when my toddler is behaving "inconveniently". I did think it was going to be a little bit different though, it is a very well written book about gentle parenting.

Best Parenting Book

I’ve listened to many parenting books, over a dozen at this point, and this one is the by far the best. Read by the author, the book offers brilliant insight into how our actions and circumstances of our own childhood influence how we parent and outlines some pitfalls many of us never notice we have. A MUST read book for both new and experienced parents, in my opinion.

Absolutely READ THIS BOOK

I found this book so helpful, it has so much wisdom and is very relatable, and insightful. The author has so much sensitivity towards both parents and children.. Very easy and enjoyable to listen to. I feel it’s really helpful for parents or caregivers to understand where our own behaviours and reactions might be coming from as well. Very touching stories and insights into child and caregiver relationships and supporting our children’s healthy emotional and mental development. Amazing for parents to be, parents of babies/ toddlers and older/ teen or even adult children. Helps me understand my own parents as well. Will be listening again and again for sure. Very grateful for this book.
