Publisher's Summary

In this collection of stories you'll meet a bunch of memorable guys including Lonesome Shorty, a cowpoke torn between the proud life in the saddle and the comforts of warm apartments and women; Buddy, the teen-age leper in Sioux Falls; Earl Grey, the great tea inventor and former Republican child; Casey, at the bat in Mudville again; Dionysus, the god of wine; and Roy Bradley, boy broadcaster.

Brilliantly funny, touching, and acute, these stories reveal the perilous situation of guys today.

What the critics say

"With his inimitable style and recognizable voice, this is one author who really should read aloud his own work." (AudioFile)
"Brilliant and imaginative...Recommended for anyone who's a guy, who knows a guy, or enjoys good writing and a good laugh." (Houston Post)
"The author, perhaps as famous for his euphonious voice as for his writing, narrates well." (Library Journal)

Great Writing from a Funny Guy.

The voice and delivery are all there, and the stories are so good- from a guy’s experience, for guys.

Hampered by Poor Format

Garrison Keillor has a perfect voice and cadence for this reading of his work, The Book of Guys. This collection of short stories is focused on anecdotes on the male experience, each both surreal and real, and universally dark.

All that said, the format is bizarre. Instead of each short story being a chapter, the audio book is split into three random chapters. Added issue, the physical book has 20+ stories. This version has eight: Dionysus, Herb Canton, Casey at the Bat, Lonesome Shorty, Marooned, Don Giovanni, Buddy the Leper, and Country/City Mouse. Note that Buddy the Leper has aged badly from when it was written.
