Publisher's Summary

A Warhammer Horror Story

Follow in the footsteps of Rudgard Howe, an enforcer cadet who, while on their first mission and embroiled in an embittered succession battle back home, uncovers a heinous sanguinary cult....

Listen to it because: in the grim darkness of the far future, horror lies in the most unlikely of places, as a routine investigation becomes something all the more sinister.

The story: on the capital world of Potence, young enforcer cadet Rudgard Howe is caught up in a bitter internecine feud to inherit his father's position of chief enforcer. As the tithe fleets approach, he is sent on his first mission to ensure that the planet's distant agri-facilities fulfil their quotas to the god-emperor. Farmed with serfs and managed by ex-Militarum soldiers, the agri-facilities are places of shocking brutality and hopelessness. But when he is sent to the outlying farmstead of Thorsarbour, Rudgard discovers a community where the crops are left to rot as the inhabitants indulge in the bloody ecstasy of a sanguinary cult. As Rudgard imposes the strict Lex Imperialis upon the farmstead, he begins to uncover a place where sanity is rapidly slipping. Just a single step into his nightmarish mission though, a series of cruel deaths threatens to dismantle everything he has ever known about the Imperium, his faith in the emperor and the strength of his very soul.

Little on the nose

It was a really interesting look at the nitty gritty of the arbites, but the twist at the end felt like a let-down after so much build up of broader supernatural elements.

Also, it feels as if this is trying to reference some other story in the warhammer horror series but the emphasis given to a proper...name(?) feels wasted.

The best of warhammer horror

The Bookkeepers skull was the first book in the warhammer horror line to actually leave me with a sense of fear. it is difficult to pause as you get drawn in to the story.

Normal 40k.

It was a good story, well read. I enjoyed it, but... normal 40k is horror! There is always scary killing things. Would like to hear more storied about this character.

Really not that scary

I feel like it was given away too early what had happened. It packed action and the story, while well written lacked real suspense.

Horror on an isolated farm .

This story is about how frightening it is to realize a corn field will swallow you up.

Should be a Warhammer Crime Novel

This felt more like a thriller or mystery style book than a horror story. It's a good book but I think it being under the Horror tagline is not accurate.

Either way. Enjoyable.

Quite a good story!

The Bookkeeper's Skull does a great job of taking some very classic horror elements, and bringing them into the 40K setting. These include an isolated town, a creepy cult, and others I will not share to avoid spoilers.

I did find the ending a bit anticlimactic, though. It just felt sort of rushed, and did not have the same suspense that the rest of the book, especially the middle, had.

Fantastic

Great setting for the story. I was a little wary of another book set on an Agri world but the focus highlights different aspects than The Oubliette. Outstanding main character, the point of view served this story well. its quick and the end is a bit anticlimactic for me but the entire story is more than worth it. Doesn't seem like the novel to get a sequel but I look forward to more horror entries by the author.
