Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder is a compassionate and informative guide to understanding this profoundly unsettling - and widely misunderstood - mental illness, believed to affect approximately six percent of the general population. Rather than viewing people with BPD as manipulative opponents in a bitter struggle, or pitying them as emotional invalids, Valerie Porr cites cutting-edge science to show that BPD is a true neurobiological disorder and not, as many come to believe, a character flaw or the result of bad parenting.

Publisher's Summary
If you or someone you love is struggling with borderline personality disorder (BPD), you need up-to-date, accurate, and accessible information on the problems you're facing and where you can turn for help. But where do you look? Much of the professional literature on BPD is too technical and confusing to be of much help. And searching the internet for accurate information can be treacherous, with some sites providing useful information and others giving dangerous advice and misinformation. If you're living with BPD, this compassionate book offers what you really need: an easy-to-follow road map to guide you through this disorder and its treatment.
This book provides answers to many of the questions you might have about BPD: What is BPD? How long does it last? What other problems co-occur with BPD? Overviews of what we currently know about BPD make up the first section of the book. Later chapters cover several common treatment approaches to BPD: DBT, mentalization-based treatment (MBT), and medication treatments. In the last sections of the book, you'll learn a range of useful coping skills that can help you manage your emotions, deal with suicidal thoughts, and cope with some of the most distressing symptoms of BPD.

Book that gives you hope
I can say I was surprised at how helpful this book was. I purchased the paperback and never found the time to read it. The audible was very soothing and easy to listen to and had a really well rounded approach to helping the listener. Thank you for understanding BPD and helping those with the disorder. I recommend for patients with BPD and loved ones who might need some insight into what it’s like and why it’s so difficult.

A lot of understanding and helpful tips
I just got diagnosed with bpd as a male at 32 and surely it didn’t make feel better but it did led me to this book. Just listening to it got me into an emotional rollercoaster. So much so, I didn’t want to finish it at times and thought of getting away from it. However everything on it really did help and I think I am informed to get better instead of just feeling helpless like before. It’s truly amazing. I really liked the last chapter about coping mechanisms.

BPD
Got to chapter 6 and had to stop. Why you ask? Reads like a basic textbook, it's incredibly repetitive, and the narrator's voice was making me violent. Not to mention the amount of times he said "BPD" in just the 6 chapters I listened to was literally starting to make me twitch... like, it's just not necessary. "compared patients with BPD blah blah blah to patients without BPD and found that the patients with BPD had this and the ones without BPD has less than the ones with BPD so in conclusion BPD BPD BPD" 😵💫 Like sir. Please use more words. ok. rant over.
Otherwise it's good information. (also available on any psychology website but whatever)

Valuable for Everyone
BPD, like DID, has roots in trauma. understanding and treating trauma will impact society in a positive way. Much the same way as germ theory revolutionized healthcare. This book shared enough information where someone with a negative outlook on themselves/ shame over diagnosis may be assuaged.
