À propos de cet audio

Before then her bedroom was a dark, windowless cellar, her activities confined to cooking and cleaning. She'd grown used to being maltreated by the Songoli family - to being a slave. She's never been outside, doesn't know how to read or write, and cannot speak English. At least that's what the Songolis believe. But Muna is far cleverer - and her plans more terrifying - than the Songolis or anyone else can ever imagine....

Minette Walters has often tackled the ugly side of human behaviour but this one was irredeemably dark. I’m not sure I will take a chance on another though Scold’s Bridle will always be a favourite

The narrator, Eyre Justine, is absolutely amazing! She infuses these characters with life and intent. While none turn out to be good people -- except Mrs. Hughes -- all, for at least a few moments, were worthy of sympathy. Minette Walters never disappoints and her narrators are always top-notch!

Excellent story!

This Minette Walters story captures the horror of a 14-year-old African girl named 'Muna' essentially abducted from an orphanage and kept captive in a basement cellar by a British Immigrant family - used as a household slave & repeatedly sexually abused. After one of the family's sons disappears and the abusive father is thrown down the stairs.. back broken.. Scotland Yard gets involved and Walters transforms the book from a viscerally uncomfortable psychological exposé into an occult-flavored spine-tingling murder/revenge tale. It definitely has some deficiencies (including disappointing stereotypes of Muslim families, for example).. but I enjoyed the book.

As to presentation: Reader Eyre Justine does a reasonable job with North African accents.. and her tone, diction, and reading timbre are commendable.. but her habit of falling into an overenunciated sing-song cadence and persistently pronouncing "-er" and "-ar" as "-AH" (e.g. "He touched hah face before sending hah to the cellAAH") gets to be pretty distracting.

In toto, 'The Cellar' merits 7.5 stars out of 10. It was a great chilling tale for free (and wonderfully short).. but I can't recommend spending a Credit on the audiobook when it leaves the "included with your subscription" menu.

[Note: this book had some pleasantly surprising parallels with Poe ('The Telltale Heart' & 'The Cask of Amontillado' in particular]
