Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Story
I'm spending the day with my best friends, Frankie and Robin, and - ugh - snobby Penny. I'm not expecting anything magical to happen, until Frankie falls into a mysterious hole behind Penny's house...and we all wind up in the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland! I've visited fairytales before. But, in Wonderland, everything is topsy-turvy. There are potions that make you grow, cakes that make you shrink, bossy caterpillars, and a horrible Queen of Hearts who wants to put us on trial.

Being a kid can really stink. And no one knows this better than Greg Heffley, who finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, author and illustrator Jeff Kinney introduces us to an unlikely hero. As Greg says in his diary: Just don't expect me to be all "Dear Diary" this and "Dear Diary" that. Luckily for us, what Greg Heffley says he won’t do and what he actually does are two very different things.

The BFG is no ordinary bone-crunching giant. He is far too nice and jumbly. It's lucky for Sophie that he is. Had she been carried off in the middle of the night by the Bloodbottler, or any of the other giants - rather than the BFG - she would have soon become breakfast. When Sophie hears that the giants are flush-bunking off to England to swollomp a few nice little chiddlers, she decides she must stop them once and for all. And the BFG is going to help her!

A book I’d given to my children
Although I’m yet to have my own children, I can’t help but make a mental note of buying the physical book and giving it to my potential children for Christmas in the future. I’ve loved Rowling’s works, and despite Christmas Pig being a children’s book, I purchased it as soon as it came out. Just like the Ickabog, this one didn’t disappoint. Perhaps, even more so, it ignited my inner child. I could appreciate the character’s complexity and the moral of treating everything in our lives as if they had feelings and souls. Coming from an East Asian background, we are taught something similar. Not to be wasteful and appreciate not only the thing but also the craftsmanship. This book resonated in a way that when I finished it, I looked around my room and admired just how wonderful it feels to be surrounded by objects of love.

More Scary & Violent Than "Heartwarming Adventure"
I thought this one was going to be a page-turner for me, and in that I was really disappointed. The story got off to a great start, and in the first few chapters, I was thinking about buying the book to read to some of my grandkids during the holidays -- perhaps a new annual tradition, or perhaps letting them listen to the Audible book on my phone. Then a lost item was violently shoved kicking and screaming down a garbage chute, and that was the last I considered that. It's not that there are none of the heartwarming moments promised in the synopsis ("A heartwarming adventure about one child’s love for his most treasured thing and how far he will go to find it."), there are just many, many more scary or frightening moments and quite a few that are downright violent. About a third of the way through the story, I actually googled the age recommendation for the book, which Amazon says is "Recommended for ages 9-10 and up because there are some bigger life concepts that younger ones may not grasp." Yes, life concepts, certainly -- along with the concept of being violently captured, dragged off to the monster's lair, and then eaten by the monster ... or rather having the "livening" part sucked out and consumed, and then the remains burnt. It seems more suitable for a Halloween setting than Christmas.
Is it a good story from a good storyteller? Yes, but not so engrossing that I did not want to turn it off. Don't think you're going to get anything in this story that harkens back to the cleverness of the Harry Potter novels, which I would imagine J.K. Rowling is going to struggle with for the rest of her career.
From a technical standpoint, some of the narrative and spoken parts are impossible to understand because of either the musical score, the noises that are part of the story, and the accents, tone, and timber of the voices.
Worth the credit to listen, but as you can tell, I was disappointed. Many of the books in my Audible Library I've listened to more than once. I'm not sure if this will be one of those.

How is this the same person who wrote Harry Potter?
I really really wanted to like this story…. I grew up with Harry Potter and still love those books. This one started off with a semi-promising story line but it devolved onto something that felt like a nightmare you’d have after been cooped up and isolated in your house for too long… moralistic paper clips and old western spectacles crying about being lost by their owners… it was like listening to a schizophrenic’s subconscious stream of thought. I want my 6 hours back please.

You have to be JOKING, This story should NOT be to
I was excepting a cute Christmas time story. What I got was a mix of Alice in Wonderland and someone ON ACID TRIP. The store is dark and creepy and not in a scaring Halloween way. I am not sure what the story was to teach a young person. Within the first hour you learned MEN are BAD Women are GOOD. IT's ok and right to be a spoiled child and act out without repercussions. I guess that is true in todays society anyway.
I bought this book thinking it would be something good to listen to with my nephew (age 7) on a long ride. What I got was a TON of question on Why are the dads' so mean? How come the boy doesn't live with his dad? Why do those kids act so bad? After about 1:30 of listening to the book, he asked me to PLEASE put something else on. I agreed, but asked if he like the book. "NO It's mean and I don't like the people in it. They are all bad." WELL SAID.
As far as the 3D hype, not worth it. Sound effects doesn't make it 3D
BOTTOM LINE - I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Some voices hard to understand
Well, it’s a good story that takes awhile to get going. I ended up enjoying it very much, but I couldn’t understand some of the characters because of the extreme computer manipulations (or mutilations, for me), especially the Loser. Unfortunately, i had to use so many rewinds, it was pretty ridiculous. The narrator and voices of Jack and CP were fantastic.

Distracting Noises
The story itself was fun, but I did not particularly enjoy the listening experience. The main narrator was good; however, I did not care for the ensemble cast. Jack’s voice was difficult to understand. Plus, I found the computerized sound effects to be extremely grating. All the background noise distracted from the story.

Over produced
The story is sweet and the main narrator is wonderful.
The added sounds are just noise and for me, offer little to the story overall.
A good number of the minor voices were very hard to hear.

Takes an adult back to being a kid
As we age we forget what it is like when you were a child. This brings back wonderful memories of time long gone and forgotten. A must read for adults who have forgotten that wonderful time.

Terribly disappointing and painful story
This was not what was expected for a child appropriate story. A story about the perils of parents fighting, divorce, sadness and step sibling bullying are certainly not the makings of a Christmas story. I began listening to this book with my granddaughter. The look of sadness on her face was enough to immediately turn it off. Later I listened to this story alone. The first chapters kept dwelling on the pain of what was happening in Jack’s mind as his parents started new lives. Having just experienced the real life version of the first chapters of this book, the yelling, fighting parents, the split, moving, it is all too much reality for a child. Especially for a child and family who are still recovering from the devastating effects of a family divided. It took several chapters before finally getting into the fictional adventures of finding DP, and those chapters droned on way too long. I am very disappointed in this story. And I would strongly caution giving Christmas Pig to any child or family in crisis. It will rip open wounds and only cause more pain and sadness.

Super Book! We loved it!
Great book listened with my two boys! All the effects were great! We had the hard cover book as well so it was a nice experience.
The story is so pretty and full of emotions! It awakened the interest and curiosity of my two boy to discover new books. We can’t wait to read the Ickabog now and many more!
