About this listen

Author of the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novels Rendezvous with Rama and The Fountains of Paradise along with such memorable novels as Childhood's End, Sir Arthur C. Clarke was - with Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein - one of the writers who defined the classic era of science fiction. From early work like "Rescue Party" and "The Lion of Comarre" through classic stories including "The Star", "Earthlight", "The Nine Billion Names of God", and "The Sentinel" (kernel of the later novel and movie 2001: A Space Odyssey), all the way to later work like "A Meeting with Medusa" and "The Hammer of God", this comprehensive short story collection encapsulates one of the great science fiction careers of all time.

What the critics say

"Narrator Ralph Lister makes Arthur C. Clarke come alive in the foreword to this collection.... [Narrator Jonathan] Davis's portrayals of uptight Captain Grant and casual Engineer McNeil are perfect... In 'All The Time in the World,' a story that led to Clarke's first television program, narrator Ray Porter is masterful in his handling of text and dialogue.... Listeners will find these classic stories fascinating and timeless." ( AudioFile)

Arthur C. Clarke’s stories whether novels or short stories range from heartwarming looks at human nature to intricate adventures into imagination. But written on a canvas of science fiction. They are treasures.
However, what sets this collection above expectations is the remarkable work of the narrators. Ray Porter, Jonathan Davis, and Ralph Lister are so versatile that you quickly forget each story is voiced by only one person. Enjoy the stories, for sure. But lose yourself in the amazing characterization of the narrators. I can’t say enough about their talent and dedication to the emotion of Clarke’s work.

I have probably read most of these stories before. Arthur C. Clarke is one of my favorite authors, and it was a pleasure to revisit his work.

I especially liked the humorous stories.

One of the greats

Have always enjoyed Clark. Finding all his shorts in one place fantastic. The reader where great. A glimps of the past looking into the future.

The stories I've listened to so far are preludes to great stories that just stop and fall flat. Perhaps they are a product of their time where science fiction was in its infancy and still being figured out.

Nonetheless, there are interesting ideas presented that must have been very unique and exciting in their time.

I think it can be appreciated for the part it played in today's science fiction.

The first half was good. Then it goes downhill very fast.
in addition, Ralph Lister's voice is annoyingly loud.

Condescending and narcissistic
