About this listen

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was a reclusive poet whose only friendships were carried out in correspondence. Despite writing almost 1800 poems in her life, very few were published until after her death. Here, the poems are presented in chronological order in their original form, unaltered by editorial revision, in one volume. It offers a wide-angle view of Dickinson's poetic development, from the clunky rhyme schemes of her youth, through valentines she wrote in the early 1850s, to the gloomy, hell-obsessed writings of her last years.

Pleasant and Interesting Poems Poorly Read

It is valuable to have a full collection of Dickinson's poems, which is why I purchased this. The rhythmic quality of the poems is very consistent throughout, and there are core oft-recurring themes, so listening to a lot of it has an interesting, meditative effect. It's cool to see her abilities and insight grow over time and experience, too. This reading however - well, the reader does have a pleasant voice. But the reading could have been much better. The most egregious problem is the frequent mispronunciations. She just does not know yet that 'assuage' is not pronounced 'a-sewage', for just one example, so that kills the coherence, not to mention the poetic affect, in that moment. The reading is a bit fast too - I listened at .95x because any slower would cause distracting voice distortion. So anyway, not a great reading; I'd recommend looking for a better version.
