Publisher's Summary

When lawyer Jenny Cooper is appointed Severn Vale District Coroner, she's hoping for a quiet life and space to recover from a traumatic divorce, but the office she inherits from the recently deceased Harry Marshall contains neglected files hiding dark secrets and a trail of buried evidence.

Could the tragic death in custody of a young boy be linked to the apparent suicide of a teenage prostitute - and the fate of Marshall himself? Jenny's curiosity is aroused. Why was Marshall behaving so strangely before he died? What injustice was he planning to uncover? And what caused his abrupt change of heart?

In the face of powerful and sinister forces determined to keep both the truth hidden and the troublesome coroner in check, Jenny embarks on a lonely and dangerous one-woman crusade for justice which threatens not only her career but also her sanity.

Enthralled

At first I was unsure if I would like this audiobook and almost gave up but something urged me to listen further. I am so very happy that I did. The narrator was superb with the various characters and there was always a need to keep listening. I really didn’t want to stop and would push through just a little bit more until I finally finished it. I was totally enthralled with every word and sentence and would highly recommend this book to anyone. Blessings from Canada 🇨🇦

Pretty good

Overall I enjoyed this book. But I was disappointed to not get closure as to what was affecting Jenny. And the constant talk of her medication taking was eye rolling after a while. All in all, it was good.

Excellent Crime story

I really enjoyed the crime fiction from the point of view of the Coroner. I found the story fast paced and while it started off slowly it was racing like a freight train to the surprising end.

First Audible Experience

Great book to start my audible experience! I wanted to read (and finish) more books, and when signing up for audible I was looking for free reads. Maybe a good mystery, to start off.

I enjoy an accent, so the narrator kept me engaged. Some of the character voices were silly, though, and I wasn’t fond of some stereotyping, which may speak to the year of the book being published and how it may have aged… I’m unsure. Either way I enjoyed the book, and found myself admiring and rooting for the protagonist. The ending was somewhat anticlimactic BUT I’m happy I chose this book. And I stuck with it! Which was, after all, the purpose of my subscription.

A very good novel

Found myself very engaged in this book. Narrator did a good job. Was rooting for the main character throughout, and think the ending was very fitting for the story! Don’t think I could have handled another disappointment for her.

Absorbing and realistic

Intriguing story and characters without being fantastical. The main character’s personality is expressed with such normality and relatability. You come to understand her fallibility, strengths, aspects of regular life that boost or undermine her. I was often held in suspense, not knowing which part of her would come out ahead - fight, gamble, flake, or switch up during a scene. The corruption, official and unofficial investigations, even the red tape pulled me into deliberating along with the characters. I couldn’t stop listening. I loved it.

A mediocre English crime mystery due to problems

The Bad:
I wasn't allowed the opportunity get to know any of the characters well enough to sympathize with them or understand them enough to feel attached to them.
I don't feel enough research was done about how it feels to have PTSD or about the coping mechanisms they employ to get through they're day.
I feel like the book was based on the incorrect notion that taking pills makes PTSD disappear for awhile so they can get down to business and be normal, It reminds of movies where the hero gets brutally shot, then puts a bandage over the inconvenient wound, and continues fighting the battle.
The ending was very frustrating.

The Good:
The author seemed to have researched the job of being a coroner and it was interesting what it entailed.
The lawyers were very believable and the courtroom parts were the best by far.
I like that there was caring for the well being of children and their metal health.

Slow to get started .. after a few rewinds .. worth staying to the end.

Although I felt compassion for Jenny, the main character, she didn’t make it easy to like her. Wish I’d had clues earlier on as why she was so driven to find the truth.

Highly recommended!

The struggle of this main character is an awesome start to the story of the crimes committed in her findings. What a great idea for us readers and listeners to know the background of our protagonist! It is definitely different and far from other mysteries I had read. I thought this would have been my final book from this author, but the nice twist in the end helped changed my mind. I added two more to my wish list. Nice touch, M. R. Hall!
