À propos de cet audio

David Wilkerson, a man on a mission, stepped onto some of the world's most dangerous streets armed only with the simple message of God's love and the promise of the Holy Spirit's power. Then the miracles began to happen.

Led by incredible faith, Wilkerson left his country pulpit in 1958 for the streets of New York City, where a murder trial of seven teenaged boys churned society's antipathy toward them. Even Wilkerson was bewildered by his sense of compassion, but in spite of doubt, he followed the Spirit's prompting to help the boys.

This is the amazing story of his journey, and of the mighty power of God to accomplish the impossible. One of the most inspiring and challenging true stories of all time, it has sold millions of copies throughout the world and has been made into a feature film.

This 1963 classic by Pastor David Wilkerson relates a testimonial about answering God's call - a Pennsylvania preacher instructed to go to New York City to minister to kids in street gangs. His description of gang culture, drug use, and depravity is exaggerated & cartoonish (no, there are no hordes of heroin-addicted teenagers engaged in bestiality in abandoned tenements, sodomizing each other, and then pulling the legs off of cats).. but pastor Wilkerson's faith, repeated re-dedication, and the series of miracles the Lord arranges in order for him to help Jesus change lives is glorious.
..and it's a good read, too. The writing is unspectacular but eminently readable (co-writers John + Elizabeth Sherrill contribute nicely) and - other than day-to-day costs-of-living and the discussion of drug addiction - the book rarely feels dated (it's as applicable in 2025 as it was in the late 50s).

As to presentation: Reader Raymond Todd is interested, emotive, and undeniably professional.. but I found his narration solidly "average". Blackstone Audio Inc. could have gotten equally effective results from anyone in their stable of performers.

Altogether, 'The Cross and The Switchblade' is a 7/10 star audiobook. I never saw the film, but remember reading the book as a teenager. I got this version as a gift from my brother (a Baptist Pastor) and I'm grateful for it. I enjoyed this recording of the book.

[Note: the description of loving & praying youths through cold-turkey drug withdrawal is both heartening and uncomfortably reminiscent of "pray the gay away" conversion therapy]
