Publisher's Summary

A year has passed since the Dark Wizard Myrin attempted to take control of the Kingdom of Verania. Though the scars of the final battle remain, Veranians have come together in unity in order to rebuild. Good King Anthony sits on the throne once more, with Morgan of Shadows at his side.

However, a king is not immortal. One day, Anthony will step down, paving the way for his son, Grand Prince Justin, to assume the throne. And Justin wants anything but.

Unfortunately for him, he finds himself with bigger things to worry about than just becoming the ruler of a country. At the celebration of the might of Verania and its people, a delegation arrives, led by a man who calls himself a magician. This man represents the king of Yennbridge, who has come to claim what was promised to him years before: the hand of the firstborn son of the king and queen of Verania. With his ridiculous friends at his side—Sam, Ryan, Kevin, Gary, and Tiggy—Justin sets out to make the visiting king’s life a living hell. Which, of course, backfires spectacularly, and when the dust settles, Justin finds his friends changed in ways he can’t expect, leaving him standing alone.

Except he’s not as alone as he thinks, given the king of Yennbridge will do anything to prove he’s worthy of the frozen heart of the Ice Prince.

Prince Justin has finally met his match. Let the games begin.

I love this series and this one didn't dissappoint. Such an imagination and so humurous. Narration was perfect as usual. I can't wait to see what happens next.

SO GOOD

The Damning Stone by TJ Klune is the fifth book within the Tales of Verania series and brings us back to our much beloved magical land in a fun and exciting way.

In the fourth book, A Wish Upon a Star, Sam of Dragons concludes his Destiny arc and saves Verania from Myrin. I was interested to see what The Damning Stone was going to be about, as I kept my momentum with going into this series blind.

I was NOT disappointed. The Damning Stone picks up a year after Myrin was bested, and we get to see the way our beloved Veranians have come together in unity to rebuild. In a fun and exciting twist, this book is told through the point of view of the much beloved Prince Justin.

At the celebration of the might of Verania and its people, a delegation arrives with shocking news that will change the course of Justin’s life. They’re told that the hand of the firstborn son of the King and Queen of Verania was promised to them years before. With everything else that they’re recovering from, this is the last thing that Justin wants to deal with.

But with his friends at his side, Justin sets out to make the visiting king’s life a living hell. Only, frat-bro Dylan is nothing like he expected, and he meets Justin every step of the way.

Hands down, The Damning Stone is my favourite book in this entire series. While Verania as a whole holds a very soft spot in my heart, this novel stood out above the rest. It feels like a through and through romance in a way the others aren’t, and I think that’s possibly why I fell so in love with this story. At my heart, I’m a sucker for a good romance, and The Damning Stone is an AMAZING romance.

While I was shocked by it, I am so glad that this book was from Justin’s POV. I’ve always loved him, ever since the very first time he and Sam had it out and I realized Justin wasn’t really bad, he was just… lonely. I’ve been rooting for him since that moment, and I fell in love with him as interim King during A Wish Upon a Star. Seeing him in this novel, and getting to see his POV, was such an amazing treat!

And holy hell, did I ever love Justin. He’s such a grumpy character, but his grump is really just a cover for his bleeding heart. He cares so much, almost too much, and he’s so scared that he’s not good enough. Being able to submerge myself into Justin’s POV made everything about him make more sense, and I just love love love how he so reluctantly cares for everyone with his whole heart.

It was actually really really interesting to see how the death of his mother has affected him throughout his life. Every single scene he had with his dad had my heart fit to bursting even with the shadow or her sometimes hanging over Justin.

It was just all around really lovely to see this deeper look at Justin as a character, and I’m so happy this book was from his point of view!

As much as I love Justin in this book… DYLAN. EVERYTHING ABOUT DYLAN??? We stan one (1) himbo and that is KING DYLAN!!! Literally Dylan is probably one of my favourite characters in the entire Verania universe now. He is such a gentle giant of a man, and he’s so so so hot. The way that he so earnestly shows up and is so ready to care for Justin just totally made my heart melt!

He was also hilarious. And kind-hearted! He cared about his Kingdom so much, which was lovely to see, and he was just so easy going! The way he was with the kids melted my heart too. Literally, just DYLAN. Everything about Dylan was just so, so good.

The way that Justin trusted in Dylan and held true to him holy fuck
While I totally fell in love with Prince Justin and King Dylan during the course of this book, I also fell in love with their budding love. The relationship that slowly builds between these two is absolutely perfect. The pacing is amazing, and the way that Dylan slowly slips past Justin’s defences had me all but jumping with joy as I cheered him on.

One of my favourite parts about this whole book is the way that Justin’s trust and affection for Dylan is tested, and they both hold true. Justin could have easily given up on the bond between them and threw away their tenuous affection, but he didn’t. He held true to his feelings for Dylan and Dylan’s feelings for him, and it was that moment that made this book stand out so much for me.

I LOVED that we got to see Justin fully let Dylan in as he chose to trust the man he was slowly falling in love with.

While the romance killed me, there is also such a heartbreaking theme of friendship. Due to Sam’s magic, Sam and co. are transformed into children with the barest hints of their memories. Seeing Justin crave HIS Sam made me literally want to cry my eyes out every single time the two of them were on page together!

The other part of this book that I LOVED was Lady Tina being certifiably insane. She was bonkers, and I loved that she was the villain? It was such a fun twist, and I was low-key cheering her on. Of course, I was cheering on our boys MORE, but I did like that she was truly unhinged.

Like all of Klune’s books, the sex between these two is well done. There was something particularly hot about the way Dylan dommed it right up, and I loved seeing these two come together like that. Seriously, this book has it all!

All in all, The Damning Stone by TJ Klune was my favourite novel in the Tales of Verania series. With strong characters and a stronger romance, this has cemented its place as one of my favourite Klune books. Even if I don’t ever reread this whole series, I will DEFINITELY be rereading this one as it sits at a super high five-star rating!
