Story
Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late-night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

Story
On a brisk autumn day, a 13-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: His father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America - and into another realm. One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery.

This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. All the stories in this collection from Stephen King are related to the Vietnam War. King fans will recognize echoes of The Dark Tower series in the collection's first story, "Low Men in Yellow Coats." As the characters develop over the next four stories, King's version of the Vietnam War becomes one of his most frightening tales ever.

Peaceful suburbia on Poplar Street in Wentworth, Ohio, takes a turn for the ugly when four vans containing armed "regulators" terrorize the street's residents, cold-bloodedly killing anyone foolish enough to step outside their homes. Houses mysteriously transform into log cabins, and the street now ends in what looks like a child's hand-drawn Western landscape. Masterminding this sudden onslaught is the evil creature Tak, who has taken over the body of an autistic eight-year-old boy, Seth Garin.

Publisher's Summary
Soon to be a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba!
In this fourth volume, Roland, Eddie, Susannah, and Jake survive Blaine the Mono's final crash, only to find themselves stranded in an alternate version of Topeka, Kansas, one that has been ravaged by the superflu virus. While following the deserted I-70 toward a distant glass palace, Roland recounts a story about a seaside town called Hambry, where he fell in love with a girl named Susan Delgado, and where he and his old tet-mates Alain and Cuthbert battled the forces of John Farson, the harrier who - with a little help from a seeing sphere called Maerlyn's Grapefruit - ignited Mid-World's final war.

Least favourite of the Dark Tower books
It is pure torment sitting through this narration and this book ... my least favourite SK book and I am sorry but listening to this narration is like listening to nails on a chalkboard.
The story feels forced but it has to be read to follow the DarkTower series. I know the narrator has passed away and I am sorry , I wish someone would just READ the book instead of trying to act it out.
Just my opinion.

Terrible
Laughably bad. Full of errors and inconsistencies. I have a theory that Stephen King did not write the majority of this book, that his wife did. It reads like the sad wish fulfillment of an overweight, insecure, lonely girl, writing about what she wished her life was like. Susan Delgado's ridiculous character goes from gushy pom pom girl to independent free thinking woman and back again as the plot goes on. Every exciting part of the book is marred by cringeworthy lines of dialogue and blatant plagiarism. And to top it all off, Stephen King comes in in the end with an awful afterword to spoil major plot points in the rest of this saga. I'm shaking my head in disgust and disbelief. I look forward to the fifth book as I know it far surpasses this one. Frank Muller is amazing though, best voice in the business.

Frank Muller is the best Audible narrator!!!!
I'm now halfway through Kings dark Tower series, which I think is the best work he's done. I have to add add that my enjoyment of this remarkable story -- with its wide array of characters, plot lines, environments, moods and literary & cultural references -- has been incredibly enriched by the dramatic range and richness Frank Muller's voice and his phenomenal ability to become John Wayne, an African-American prostitute, a gravel-voiced gunslinger, a frightened young boy, a vengeful maiden aunt, a cynical New York junkie or a young woman in love. His impressions of very different well-known people are dead-on, and he can even sing well when called for. He is not only believable in all the roles he plays, but his emotional intelligence adds to the heights and depths of the roller-coaster ride that King takes us on. I will seriously consider buying any book that he narrates; he's that good!!

Surprise Prequel is Unsurprising Solid-ish
Frank Muller is amazing. I really don't know what else to say. His preformence kept me engaged despite the often slow pacing of the book. The story fits nicely into the seires and covers a lot of ground but it's needlessly detailed at times; creating frustration (i.e. "Get on with it!") instead of anticipation.
I love the world Steven King has created in the dark tower series so I'll stand true and remember the face of my father... But I do hope the next book doesn't feel like a trudg fest.
I would and will recommend this book and series regardless of my griping.

The best of the first 4 books in the series
This recording gets an overall 4 stars because of the quality of the recording. It should be better. This book deserves better. There is a constant static in the background, and a chapter repeats itself towards the end. The story is great. The narrator is great. More attention to detail would have been great.

Such a great book
I wouldn't go as far as to call myself a fanatic of Stephen Kings books. Though I've read a lot of his work and hardly let myself deviate from this book or any other of his books in the series once I purchased one. That said, this statement speaks to my review that this book is absolutely spectacular. Stephen Kings use of his imagination has been awing in this series so far. I yet again am more than excited to read or listen to the next book of his series. What surprised me about the book was how much emotion it made me feel when he wrote about the characters. The story was touching, thrilling and not without an aspect of wonder in it. I highly recommend that you read this book.
