The author could have done a lot more with the characters that HG Wells created. I liked Mexican Gothic by this author but this story was pretty slow and lacked momentum.

THE DAUGHTER OF DOCTOR MOREAU is a slow burn story about the daughter of a controversial scientist and the man hired to protect both her and the human-animal hybrids the scientist makes.

Both Carlota and Montgomery feel humans, meaning they are as flawed as they come. Carlota is kind and cares about her family, wanting to please her father, but she is also a little naïve and can be selfish.

Montgomery on the other hand is gruff and protective, but his desire for alcohol and his employer’s daughter don’t paint him as a “good guy.”

The plot is fairly slow, mostly focusing on the relationship with the characters living in this unconventional space, and the danger that comes when a handsome, wealthy stranger looks to court Carlota.

Still, Moreno-Garcia is very talented with her prose, able to create gorgeous atmospheres and immersion, and the premise itself is unique. While I didn’t love this book, I don’t regret reading it!
