I have never read anything so detailed about what led up to the Civil War. Always basics only so this was enlightening. The story is excellently written, thank you Erik Larson. The narrator, Will Patton is one of the best that I have heard yet. Well read and a Very pleasant voice to listen to. And the swearing was bleeped out for sensitive ears like mine. Overall..... Well worth the$$charged or a monthly credit.
This book definitely deserves the five star ratings that it is receiving!!

I devoured this book - the narration combined with the wonderful entries from diaries and letters of the time shed a light in what I really never knew about the Civil War: how it all began. This book sits now as one of my top ten for 2024.

Another amazing read from Eric Larson one of my favourite authors. I so enjoy his work and this lives up to the standards I’ve come to expect. Excellent narration, so easy to listen to and made me feel as if I was experiencing the story first hand. I own and have read several books on the US civil war and this will sit alongside them as part of my essential reading collection.

I learned nothing about the civil war from this author’s collection of boring minutiae. An absolute waste of time. The narrator was decent if a bit overwrought.
