The Demon’s in the Detail

Can a sexy demon really spin straw into gold?

Poe Dupin, raven shifter and thief extraordinaire, is in trouble with a capital ‘T.’ Not only did he get his wing caught in the cookie jar during his latest heist, but his loser stepdad, the alpha, seems determined to run their roost into the ground. And Baltimore is many things, but forgiving is not on the list.

When his stepdad puts the roost in peril, Poe sees no choice but to bargain with Charm City’s only demon, Tommy Tittoti. Rumors are that Tommy eats the souls of those foolish enough to try. Three strikes and you’re out. But really, Poe wasn’t using his soul anyway. And if it saves his roost? Worth it.

Tommy isn’t what Poe expects. Demon - huge, horned, hairy, and scary, right? Nope. Blond, gorgeous, with a bubble butt, and a lilting drawl that beckons Poe to come play. Total hookup-app fantasy material. Even if he is a murder twink.

Poe’s no angel, but Tommy...well he’s more devil than demon. Yet, Poe just can’t seem to keep his feathers out of the fire. As one bargain turns into two, and then a third tragedy strikes the ravens, Poe finds himself falling for a guy who may very literally be the death of him. Or maybe the flames will burn them both.

The Demon’s in the Details is a fast-paced roller coaster of a romance with a guaranteed HEA and lots of steam. Shenanigans include: a gold object that is definitely not a ring, a best friend who’s trigger-happy, and a demon who’s got a few surprises up his, uh, sleeve.

Previously published in the Fables Retold Anthology. Around 60,000 words. No new content has been added.

Amazing story and great narration make this a must listen

This is my first book my Ms Maslow and I am eagerly for loading her catalogue as I write this. As a long time fan of Mr. Boudreaux, I happened on this through my search for his works. And what a find!

Tommy and Poe come together in a riveting tale. It’s sexy and clever. You won’t be Sorry investing your credits here.

Best voice actor in the biz

Definitely listen to this book! This was a GREAT story, but we need to recognize Greg Boudreaux/Greg Tremblay as the magical touch for this audiobook. Any book that he narrates is made 90% better by his acting. If you haven't listened to other stories read by him, you need to do! There are some great narrators out there with sexy voices: Joe Arden, Sebastian York, Teddy Hamilton, Zachary Webber. But Greg's voice and acting is just peerless! He's the Michael Phelps of voice acting. (BTW, Andi Arndt is the female equivalent.) Check out Drawn Together by ZA Maxfield and The Quarterback by MacKenzie Blair, And Muscle and Bone by Mary Calmes. So good!

Good. The bad guys were so evil it was distressing

The Raven shifter, Poe, was stuck with an abusive stepfather/alpha. He was beyond horrible and well-matched with the evil crime boss, Briggs. Chapter after chapter of their cruelty weighed on me. Poe did the best he could for his fellow ravens but the bad guys kept upping the stakes. It does work out in the end but it was a difficult journey. Greg Boudreaux was exceptional and the only reason I didn't quit and return the book.

📖 Story comment: I was thoroughly entertained by The Demon's in the Details. It only took about an hour for me to be completely invested in the story. The world building is cleaver, the characters entertaining and it's been a while since the bad guys were REALLY bad guys. (... sorry - not sorry, they got what they deserved!).

He has a good range of characters so its easy to distinguish them from each other. Has good cadence, inflections and intonations, and he really knows how to bring characters and their story to life.

Greg Boudreaux! Always a pleasure to hear him!

Raven shifter Poe Dupin's stepdad alpha Evan puts their entire roost in danger because of a huge gambling debt totaling $80,000. Even as a premier thief, Poe knows he is unable to raise that amount of money. When his friend suggests he approached the demon Tommy Tittoti with the problem, Poe feels he has no choice. His much younger half-siblings and the other members of the roost are depending on him. And it isn't the first time he's saved them from his stepfather's selfish choices, incompetence, and irresponsibility. Challenging him as the roost's alpha won't work either as the alpha's power is a synergistic combination of the power of ALL ravens in the roost.
Poe visits Tommy at his place of business, a barbershop where he is known to administer more than a shave and a haircut. Expect to encounter an enormous monstrosity, Poe finds a gorgeous, blonde, and small-statured twinky demon! Just the kind of man Poe may not find too hard to work with after all. But it is a demon's nature to bargain for any requests made of them and Tommy is no different. However, he never expects to do business with a person like Poe who is so giving, protective, selfless--and handsome!
Writer Meghan Maslow gives readers a special treat with her awesome retelling of the fairy tale Rumplestiltskin. Setting it in Baltimore, the home of Edgar Allan Poe who famous poem is titled "The Raven", the author builds an incredible world filled with shifters and other supernatural beings--each with their own particular gifts and abilities. The city forms the backdrop for turf wars and battles between paranormal factions that allow for extensive development of the main characters both in the relationship between themselves and amongst the other players in the story. The writer is especially imaginative in designing a demon who, in spite of his basic nature, was able to win the readers' hearts. The challenges and conflicts for the protagonists are also well imagined. The resolutions and conclusions are absolutely brilliant. This writer continues to amaze me with her stories and I am wanting for more of just anything she writes!
As a native of Baltimore City Maryland, this story is near and dear to my heart for so many reasons. The world Meghan Maslow creates from Baltimore is awesome, especially for those readers like me who are familiar (and in love) with its neighborhoods, landmarks, and history. The Bromoseltzer Tower! Yes, there's a fire department right there. And Fort McHenry? A school trip was scheduled there every year of elementary and middle school! Yes, Francis Scott Key penned the American national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner" as he observed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814 during the War of 1812. He was inspired upon seeing the American flag still flying over the fort at dawn. And Key's Highway? It's named in honor of Francis Scott and passes the Domino Sugar plant where my father worked until he died in 1999. Here's hoping this tale becomes book one of a series or, at the very least, a trilogy.

Fun, engaging story with great narration

The Demon’s in the Details is a wholly absorbing spin on the fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin. Meghan Maslow remakes the story of an otherworldly creature (perhaps fairy, maybe the devil, definitely demonic) with great power and wicked intent into a contemporary, paranormal romance. Poe represents the Miller’s daughter, caught in a desperate plight brought on by the impossible predicaments caused by his stepfather. Rumpelstiltskin (called Tom Tit Tot in England), aka Tommy Tittoti (get it?), takes advantage of the plight to his benefit through very carefully worded bargains.

There’s something about the Rumpelstiltskin tale that calls to me. Maybe it’s the lawyer in me, but the examination of the bargains, looking for the loopholes in the language, and anticipating the no doubt unexpected outcome that results, is simply addictive. As they say, the devil’s demon’s in the details, and the details are fascinating indeed.

Tommy’s also fascinating. In Ms. Maslow’s retelling, she makes him morally ambiguous yet consistently honest with Poe, going against his inherent demonic nature, often at significant cost. Poe, for his part, is a raven shifter (lots of clever Edgar Allen Poe references here) who puts everyone’s welfare above his own. This is what drives him to ask for bargain after bargain from Tommy. The push-pull between these two creates a dynamic, unpredictable relationship that is difficult to look away from. But you won’t want to anyway because they fit together so well. The sex is off the charts hot as hell. Apropos for our demon. There’s also action, scheming, and a whole lot of mischief, including a little suspense for good measure.

Greg Boudreaux provides even more depth to this story in the way he embodies the characters. I loved his southern accent for Tommy. It’s a faithful execution that conveys complex emotions beneath a seeming innocent simplicity. Admittedly, Ms. Maslow’s depiction of Tommy as smooth as silk, a southern gentleman delivering cutesy “sugar” pet names, seems incongruous with his character. However, I suppose him being from the South makes sense, given he is a demon from the depths of hell.

Mr. Boudreaux’s narration has an easy, accessible smoothness and fluidity to it that embodies Tommy perfectly. His portrayal of Poe is equally skilled and impactful. Overall, Mr. Boudreaux displays his remarkable skill in vocalizing the words on the page with proper inflections and plenty of emotion. What I love most about Mr. Boudreaux is that he knows how to tell a story. His vocal performance is effortless and easy to fall into, just like listening to someone reading you a Grimm fairytale by the fire.

I highly recommend this fun, engaging, often funny, and subtly romantic story. It’s an absorbing, enjoyable way to spend a few hours wrapped up in Mr. Boudreaux’s euphonious tones.

Start of a fun and steamy series

No spoilers.

The two man in characters are enjoyably written with defined motivations that make it understandable and relatable that the characters behave as they do. There’s a bit of world building since the story takes place in an American city (Baltimore) that also appears to be future state and with magic. I enjoyed how the author was able to build the world around the characters without excessive exposition.

Greg Boudreaux is fabulous as always!

A fun ride

A Megan Maslow paranormal story read by Greg Boudreaux. What’s not to like. We have a story of friendship, family and love. All wrapped up in a dysfunctional shifter raven community with a helpful interfering demon and a human using every opportunity to engineer the right outcome. Although there are travails there is also a lot of humour and sexy time for one to be downhearted for long.
