Publisher's Summary

“Adrian McKinty is a gifted storyteller I love to read, and Sean Duffy is a character you will never forget.”Don Winslow, #1 internationally bestselling author

From New York Times bestselling author Adrian McKinty comes the next thrilling mystery in the Edgar Award-winning Sean Duffy detective series

Slamming the door on the hellscape of 1980s Belfast, Detective Inspector Sean Duffy hopes that the 1990s are going to be better for him and the people of Northern Ireland. As a Catholic cop in the mainly Protestant RUC he still has a target on his back, and with a steady girlfriend and a child the stakes couldn’t be higher.

After handling a mercurial triple agent and surviving the riots and bombings and assassination attempts, all Duffy wants to do now is live. But in his final days in charge of Carrickfergus CID, a missing persons report captures his attention. A fifteen-year-old traveler girl has disappeared and no one seems to give a damn about it. Duffy begins to dig and uncovers a disturbing underground of men who seem to know her very well. The deeper he digs the more sinister it all gets. Is finding out the truth worth it if DI Duffy is going to get himself and his colleagues killed? Can he survive one last case before getting himself and his family out over the water?

Must Have More!

Adrian Mckinty and Gerard Doyle are like lime juice and vodka; bracing, invigorating, nutritious!

I really hope this is not the last Sean Duffy novel. Once again McKinty manages what few modern authors can, that is, tell a compelling story with equal measures of humor and gravitas. His characters are believable and endearing with actual story arcs that make you care about them. I love how he occasionally peppers the prose with obscure facts and philosophy. Without McKinty I would have never learned the concept of ‘mono no aware’ and my life would be less complete.

Also, unlike many modern authors, he is telling a story not giving a lecture. After working all day, taking care of my family, and dealing with the general chaos of life, I don’t want to listen to how much I suck because of my immutable characteristics, I just want to escape for an hour or so while I am running or in the gym.

Now I would be remiss if I didn’t point to the merits of the narrator Gerard Doyle. His voice is so mellifluous that I could listen to him read the text on the back of a shampoo bottle and be enraptured. He is able to seamlessly, at leas to my American ear, call up countless dialects from all areas of the UK, not just Ireland. Crucially, when he reads a female role you are not taken out of the story, they are believable but not overdone.

I was so excited about this book—-

… that I re-listened to all previous SD books to get ready. Finally it arrived, and it was so good that halfway through, I started to panic that the book was flying by. So I started it over. Then I got worried it would be the last in the series,

Checked under the car for mercury tilt switch bombs. Clear. There could be more SD in our futures. More birds, more Latin, more limericks, more vodka gimlets. Adrian McKinty’s writings and Gerard Doyle’s narrations are brilliant. How are they not household names in America? And what on earth will young Lawson do without Duffy and the Crab Man? This was my favorite SD ever

Another superb Sean Duffy tale

I hope with all my heart that this is not the end of the Sean Duffy series. It has become a dear and constant friend in my listening life. A down to earth, real & lifelike protagonist is Sean Duffy. The story is intriguing & complex & finishes with a good twist. Just perfect!

A beautiful end -

- Although I live in hope that we’ll see more of Sean Duffy. Absolutely my favorite detective series, and my favorite living author. Adrian McKinty’s work is like nothing else. I wait for every release and greedily gulp each one down like air or water or anything that sustains life. Gerard Doyle is and always will be the voice of Sean Duffy. I’ve read all of the Duffy books (and McKinty’s Michael Forsyth books) in order, over and over again. Nothing compares to them. Now the wait begins for his next . . .

New chapter in a favorite series

Adrian McKinty, Gerard Doyle, Sean Duffy...( Mic drop )

Sean Duffy ranks with my favorite detectives, Harry Bosch and Dave Robicheaux.

Not McKinty's best

I bought this for my husband for his birthday. I introduced him to McKinty's books and he has loved them. I've listened to a couple, but they are a bit violent for me. He was really looking forward to this. As always, Gerard Doyle is spectacular. The author's writing is excellent, but he found the story not as cohesive and captivating as the previous books. He did finish it and said he enjoyed it okay, but would not go back and reread it as we often do with favorites.

Boring

Ive completed most of the series and was truly disappointed in this one. I guess it was a mystery because facts and clues are left out and then a new story is told, there was a hard hint who it was and that pretty much ruined what interest I had.

Sean Duffy, I missed you!

Sean Duffy is one of my favorite book characters. He may be my actual favorite. Gerard Doyle is a splendid narrator who really brings Duffy's idiosyncrasies to life.

It has been several years since Book 6 was published, and I felt Sean's absence like an old friend. To say I was excited when I found out this book was being released is simply incorrect. I was sooo happy. The book did not let me down.

I vaguely recall an article stating that Book 7 would be either the first of 3 final books or 2 final books about Duffy. I also think they all might already be written. There is a part of me that simply wants them all released NOW; however, I know that it is better if they are spread out over a period of time - which I am sure is what will happen.

I have no doubt the final book(s) will be just as wonderful as this one and the previous 6.

Thanks you Mr. McKinty for giving us a wonderful story, written over a series of books. Can't say enough good things about them.

Evocative and atmospheric, beautifully written and plotted.

McKinty is known for his fast moving thrillers like The Chain and The Island, but his Sean Duffy novels are so much better. The bitter Irish sea, drifting grey mists, peaty comforting whisky, the grudges and eruptions of violence in Northern Ireland’s troubles, the hard men who make war form the evocative setting for a tautly plotted mystery about a missing traveler girl whom neither cops nor journalists think is worth their effort because “she ran before.” There are many trademark McKinty plot twists and a gift at the end, in what he calls Duffy’s last case. It will be a pity if it is, because the complexity and psychology of the main protagonist makes Duffy an unforgettable character. I discovered McKinty when I was searching for narrations by Gerard Doyle, one of the best narrators around. He is absolutely pitch perfect, and brings all the characters to life, as well as the sometimes moody rural landscapes and urban hellscapes. Reading this made me want to go back to read the whole series from scratch. I hope there’s another Duffy book but if not, I hope McKinty creates another protagonist as complex and nuanced as Duffy.
