I say this as a decades-long true crime fan: this is a classic. It is a live wire, the most addictive read of 2025 for me.

Compellingly researched and a taut narrative

One has to wonder if Sociopathy is genetic. This book lays out a jaw-dropping degree of selfishness, absence of any hint of empathy, and straight-up evil in a privileged Blue-Blood South Carolina family. Wall Street Journal reporter Valerie Bauerlein - who attended every day of the Alex Murdaugh family-annihilation trial - offers an extensively-researched and reasonably well-written documentary of instance after instance of theft, betrayal, and murder from the early 1900s through to the present day by member after member of the maddeningly entitled Murdaugh clan. Bauerlein's storytelling style is readable and her completeness is admirable - but she's overwhelmed by the sheer volume of crimes committed by the various members of the family. I found myself too often confused. She probably should have stuck to the most recent case.

As to presentation: Reader Maggi-Meg Reed provides above-average professional narration. Her diction is crisp, her timbre & cadence are listenable for hours, and her interested tone is pitch-perfect. My one issue with her is poor voice-acting when called upon (her "sneering" spoiled rich kid voices can be irritating, for example). Altogether, Random House Audio Inc. cast this book well.

In toto, 'The Devil at his Elbow: Alex Murdaugh and the Fall of a Southern Dynasty' merits 6 stars out of 10. Better True Crime books beckon for your Credit.

[Note: The inclusion of a PDF with names of individuals involved in various conflicts, crimes, and betrayals is much appreciated. The number of selfish/shady characters in the genealogy is daunting. The summary is almost obligatory for anyone even *attempting* to make sense of this narrative]
