While the Space Marines get all the glory, it’s the guard that holds back the tide of threats that would soon drown the Imperium by sheer weight of numbers. Publisher's Summary
Book seven of the Ciaphas Cain series
Legendary Commissar Ciaphas Cain joins a group of Reclamators Space Marines aboard a space hulk but soon finds himself alone and faced with both tyranids and orks....
Listen to it because: it's a typically sideways look at the mighty Adeptus Astartes (albeit a pretty unusual chapter), viewing them through the eyes of the wry and dry Commissar Cain.
The story: Commissar Cain is called to duty once more, saving a governor's daughter from a planet overrun by rebels. The uprising hides something far more sinister however - genestealer hybrids! The search for the source of the alien threat leads Cain to a drifting space hulk - a far safer place than beside the obsessed governor's daughter. But when the Reclamator Space Marines suffer devastating losses at the hands of the Great Devourer, Cain and his trusty aide Jurgen must go it alone. With the tyranids waking and a group of stow away orks on the loose, there are no safe places to run or hide, and Cain must use all his ingenuity and cunning to escape the space hulk alive.
Written by Sandy Mitchell. Narrated by Helen McAlpine, Stephen Perring, Penelope Rawlins and Andrew James Spooner.

The synopisis is a bit misleading, great book
the synopsis should be "Cain spends half the book in bed and there are space marines too... and something about a space hulk in the last quarter or.. something.

more easy good times
It's a fun time. It has all the standard beats of a Cain story, but when you like the formula there is nothing to complain about. I think this works as a starting point for the series. Nothing of significance persists from book to book so you don't need to know what came before to enjoy it. The references to earlier events are passing and trivial and don't impact knowing what is going on here.
There is a good variety of enemies and environments. Seeing Cain have to figure out a space hulk was enjoyable. Stephen Perring does an amazing job infusing the narration with the sardonic cynicism of the character.

Cain never disappoints
Anybody familiar with the Cain novels will be welcoming this novel as another of the beloved set.
This story is a bit of a flashback, but entirely worthwhile! The space hulk Spawn of Damnation, Viridia, the Reclaimers, and a lot of "domestic swashbuckling".
Cain is the Black Adder of the 40k, along with his own Bauldric.
This is an audio book with 4 separate voice actors, so be aware. They are in excellent concert, unforced, and arranged in such a way that it makes sense.
This is NOT some sort of nonsense audio drama, with daft sound effects and bad sound mixing.
This is a tried and true, well directed, well performed, enjoyable novel about our favorite "Hero of the Imperium".

They had me in the first 2 hours not going to lie
warning small spoiler ahead
I love the book as always it was entertaining and I really couldn't put it down. they had me in the first two hours because I thought jürgan wasnt going to have a role in this. Then like magic he appeared and proceeded to save Kane from the ministrations of nobility and servants that just wanted to do their job.
