Publisher's Summary

From New York Times best-selling true crime author John Glatt comes the devastating story of the Turpins: a seemingly normal family whose dark secrets would shock and captivate the world.

On January 14, 2018, a 17-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with shaking fingers. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings - ranging in age from two to 29 - were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. "I've never been out," she stammered.

To their family, neighbors, and online friends, Louise and David Turpin presented a picture of domestic bliss: dressing their 13 children in matching outfits and buying them expensive gifts. But what police discovered when they entered the Turpin family home would eclipse the most shocking child abuse cases in history.

In the first major account of the case, investigative journalist and author John Glatt delves into the disturbing details and recounts the bravery of the 13 siblings in the face of unimaginable horror.

Heartbreaking story

The story was so heartbreaking, I’m so glad those kids were freed from that awful home and away from their despicable parents.
The narrator was awful. I thought I would get used to his way of narrating but he was very difficult to listen to right to the end. I do not recommend this book for that reason.

Grim

There is nothing positive one can say about the deplorable conditions in which these children were raised, and I glad the parents have been incarcerated. I admire the courage of the daughter who escaped and called for help, and I wish all 13 the best as they build their lives in freedom.

Worst Narration Ever

This was an important true life story that warranted a quality performance.
But instead it was narrated by what sounded like computer generated.
Such a devastating story of neglect was further neglected by the quality of this production.

compelling

when a person or people, particularly children are going to work school or parents going to work and appear unclean and lack social skills there may be abuse going that is not taken into account until you hear a store like this one

Horrific true story of 13 amazing kids

Can't wrap my head around how this was able to happen for so many years. Hard to review a book about such horrible things. Glad their torture ended and I got to learn about it. I recommend this book only if your strong enough to hear about children being abused, it's not easy to hear how much they went through.

Heartbreaking

Sad story. I appreciated the full family history and description of how things evolved over time but was also shocked at the details. Read well and was written at an appropriate pace to understand the full picture of events and outcomes.

Poorly written and performed

The content seems to be reasonably researched but the writing is repetitive and the narration was painful to listen to.

Unbelievable monsters, those horrible parents

The poor children needed to have their story told. I hope that they are able to live happy lives.
The parents deserve to have all of their cruelty showered back on them.

The story was very repetitive and the narrator was extremely monotonous.
