About this listen
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
“Other authors are at a ten out of ten, for me, and Lisa is a solid hundred.” —Gillian McAllister, The Sunday Times (London) bestselling author of Wrong Place Wrong Time
The #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jewell weaves a “simply masterful” (Samantha Downing, internationally bestselling author) thriller about twisted marriages, fractured families, and deadly obsessions in this stand-alone sequel to The Family Upstairs.
Early one morning on the shore of the Thames, DCI Samuel Owusu is called to the scene of a gruesome discovery. When Owusu sends the evidence for examination, he learns the bones are connected to a cold case that left three people dead on the kitchen floor in a Chelsea mansion thirty years ago.
Rachel Rimmer has also received a shock—her husband, Michael, has been found dead in the cellar of his house in France. All signs point to an intruder, and the French police need her to come urgently to answer questions about Michael and his past that she very much doesn’t want to answer.
After fleeing London thirty years ago in the wake of a horrific tragedy, Lucy Lamb is finally coming home. While she settles in with her children and is just about to purchase their first house, her brother takes off to find the boy from their shared past whose memory haunts their present.
As they all race to discover answers to these convoluted mysteries, they will come to find that they’re connected in ways they could have never imagined.
In this masterful standalone sequel to her haunting New York Times bestseller The Family Upstairs, “Lisa Jewell is a superb writer at the top of her game” (Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author) with another jaw-dropping, intricate, and affecting novel about the lengths we will go to protect the ones we love and uncover the truth.

Story
Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England. It’s the sort of place where doctors and lawyers and old-money academics live. It’s not the sort of place where people get stabbed in the back 30 times with a kitchen knife in their own homes. Someone must have seen something. Newlywed Joey Mullen, for example, recently returned from four years of working in Ibiza. She and her husband, Alfie, are eager to find a place of their own in her hometown. But Joey finds herself distracted by the man next door, Tom Fitzwilliam.

Story
At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

Best ever Lisa Jewell - a natural book to be read out loud.
Loved this book - it’s my favourite Lisa Jewell so far. Must be read followed by The Family Upstairs as this provides the context for what is in this novel.
What I like about Ms Jewell’s writing is that it feels as if it were purposefully written to be read out loud. Great performances - totally likeable!!

Excellent follow up
I really enjoyed this second book and happy I read the first one, The Family Upstairs. I would recommend
reading the first book before this one. Story was very good and narrators too.

A little confusing
A little confusing and a simplistic view of childhood trauma and abuse. But overall an ok story

Not bad but not worth the wait of the preorder
Not my favorite Lisa Jewel. It was kind of stupid, lol
I think a lot of it had to do with jumping back and forth

An exciting, riveting follow up to The Family Upstairs
I'm so glad Jewell wrote what is the missing part of the first book, bringing proper closure to the lives of the characters and wrapping it up neatly for us. The performances of the voice actors was great, I wouldn't want anything changed. If you've read The Family Upstairs, you should really follow it up with The Family Remains.

Loved it!
I couldn’t wait to read this after finishing the Family Upstairs. Really enjoyed it! The only reason I gave 4 stars for performance was Michael’s American accent wasn’t great and I found it annoying.

Lisa does it again!!
The Family Upstairs was and still is one of my favourite books I have ever listened to/read. I was sooooo excited when I saw this one available for pre-order, and stopped everything to listen to it the second it became available.
This one was also fantastic, all of the narrators were wonderful and it tied up a lot of loose ends. Highly recommend this one if you liked The Family Upstairs (you definitely have the read that one first to understand this one)
