Publisher's Summary

Second in the best-selling Wideacre Trilogy, a compulsive drama set in the 18th century. By Philippa Gregory, the author of The Other Boleyn Girl and The Virgin's Lover.

The Wideacre estate is bankrupt, the villagers are living in poverty and Wideacre Hall is a smoke-blackened ruin. But in the Dower House, two children are being raised in protected innocence. Equal claimants to the inheritance of Wideacre, rivals for the love of the village, they are tied by a secret childhood betrothal but forbidden to marry.

Only one can be the favoured child. Only one can inherit the magical understanding between the land and the Lacey family that can make the Sussex village grow green again. Only one can be Beatrice Lacey's true heir.

Second in a trilogy …. Just the first, maybe not for everyone

Although, not as disturbing as the first book, it continues the story of how much wicked and evil is generated by greed.

The Favoured Child

I am not a fan of flowery prose that is very descriptive but the historical story was interesting. There are many good things about this book but there should be a warning about rapes.

Very enlightening

The author really managed to take ‘me in to the mind of an abused woman. The main character is so loving but her one and only flaw is that she allowed the villain to really control her life. I honestly cried at some parts for her and In the very end she did right. A very well done book.

main character

i really was not a fan of how cowardly the main character was. She smartened up at the end, but it was too late.

Troubeled family

Excuse my english. I loved the first book and this one too, but when it's going bad again and again i woud like to shake Julia. I understand that at this time, womens had no whrigths and nothing to say. It's very shocking. I hope the third one is more joyfull.

A good listen, Kate Rawson is an amazing narrator.

I enjoyed the story overall, however, I found the character Julia hard to like or just infuriating. Perhaps I am looking at it from the position of a strong opinionated women rather than a teen girl.
