Publisher's Summary

Heir to the most notorious clan in the Highlands, Hugh MacIain hides his identity while imprisoned in the bowels of Fort William's hell. Aye, this braw warrior has endured horrors that should have seen him dead, though now it appears it's the bloody flux that will send him to Satan's fire.

Optimistic, competent, and captivating, Charlotte Hill takes pity on the fevered prisoner sprawled atop a cot in the fort's surgery. When finally the Highlander opens his eyes, he seizes her heart with a pained stare. Truly, this is no commoner - but in 1692, a warrior loyal to the Jacobite cause and the daughter of a government colonel may as well be worlds apart.

After his escape, Hugh snatches his chance to woo the lass, until disaster strikes. While war and lust for vengeance force Charlotte further from Hugh's arms, the couple's romance seems aimlessly adrift on the open sea. Before they sail too far apart, can the tender love of an English lady coax a determined Highlander from his path of revenge?

One of the best

I’ve listened to many of Amy’s books and this one is truly one of the best. I do appreciate when there is an epilogue and also appreciate her author’s notes at the end.

Awful Character Development, Wonderful Narration

I really don't like to leave bad reviews, but I've read the book and I feel like I need to write down my thoughts. This romance just didn't make sense to me. There was huge potential with the romantic development here, but it fell way short. How can the H&H fall in love after only one conversation? We don't see them interact much at all, and there were so many great opportunities for us to really *feel* their love growing. I hate to say it, but this was supremely disappointing for me. I've read a few of Amy Jarecki's books, now, and I've noticed this stunted character and plot development elsewhere, as well. I realize that these novels are based on actual events, but you needn't change the overall story to keep the plot engaging. Thing is, her voice, use of description, and way of writing is actually quite pleasing, I just can't get past the poor plot and character development.

Additionally, I feel that the dialogue and inner thoughts of the characters are far too melodramatic. I found myself rolling my eyes and growling my disapproval when the characters said (over and over again) that they couldn't live without the other. I like having emotional scenes, but when the H&H keep droning on about how much they need the other, the lack of imagination and variety really gets tiring. I don't want over-the-top love right from the beginning. I'd like to see it slowly burn, and grow.

That all being said, I truly loved the narration by Joel Froomkin. He had a different "voice" for each of the characters, and his female characters' voices were so believable that in those moments, I completely forgot that it was narrated by a man. His voice has a natural, low timbre that was extremely pleasing to the ear. I'll definitely listen to his audiobooks again, but never again by this author. Very well done, Mr. Froomkin! You have a dedicated listener in me!
