A similar tone to Kushner’s new novel Creation Lake but without a strong central action pulling it together. The main character encounters real flamethrowers but I felt there wasn’t enough done with that. A murder happens, but she doesn’t seem to have played a role in it.

However, there are great scenes of the fascinating but ridiculous New York art world. Its juxtaposition with the violent conflict of working-class Italians against their rich bosses makes art seem just a fantasy world.

Overall, I did enjoy it, including the author’s performance. I think Kushner developed her vision fully later in the brilliant Creation Lake.

Great images and characters but story a bit weak

The downward tone of the author’s voice made this good story very difficult to listen to. The same flat decline in nearly every sentence. Some spirited conversations became painful marathons of listening, losing all depth and banter. What was written to be funny wasn’t due to the morose repetitive tone.
Interesting story, liked the end. Definitely read not listen.
