À propos de cet audio

The Ramayana, one of the world's greatest epics, is also a tragic love story. In this brilliant retelling, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni places Sita at the center of the novel: This is Sita's version. The Forest of Enchantments is also a very human story of some of the other women in the epic, often misunderstood and relegated to the margins: Kaikeyi, Surpanakha, Mandodari. A powerful comment on duty, betrayal, infidelity, and honor, it is also about women's struggle to retain autonomy in a world that privileges men, as Chitra transforms an ancient story into a gripping, contemporary battle of wills. While the Ramayana resonates even today, she makes it more relevant than ever, in the underlying questions in the novel: How should women be treated by their loved ones? What are their rights in a relationship? When does a woman need to stand up and say, "Enough!"?

I loved the narrators way of bringing this story to life. I was completely hooked. I enjoyed hearing this classic story from Sita's own perspective. I could feel all the love and pain that she experienced as I listened on.

Overall, this was a beautiful and dreamy telling of a tragic love story. Everything I could have hoped for.

the story I've been craving

Need written text alongside narration. Its not enough to listen alone. Some accents words pronunciations differ. So we need texts in audible.

Narration is not enough

While *The Story of Enchantments* promises a fresh take on an ancient tale, it ultimately feels more like a modernized, whitewashed retelling rather than an authentic exploration of Sita’s perspective. The book claims to center on Sita’s voice, but her character lacks depth, and the narrative seems more focused on reshaping the story to fit contemporary sensibilities rather than truly capturing her essence. Instead of delving into the complexities of her experiences, the novel simplifies and reinterprets events in a way that strips them of their cultural and emotional weight.

For readers seeking a genuine, nuanced portrayal of Sita, this book may fall short. It offers an accessible retelling but does so at the cost of losing the richness and depth of the original epic.
