Publisher's Summary
A spellbinding novel about an unspeakable secret that could destroy a family, from the New York Times bestselling author of Finding Emma.
Elle is a survivor. She’s managed to piece together a solid life from a childhood of broken memories and fairy tales her mom told her to explain away bad dreams. But weekly visits to her mother still fill Elle with a paralyzing fear she can’t explain. It’s just another of so many unanswered questions she grew up with in a family estranged by silence and secrets.
Elle’s world turns upside down when she receives a deathbed request from her grandfather, a man she was told had died years ago. Racked by grief, regrets, and a haunted conscience, he has a tale of his own to tell Elle: about her mother, an imaginary friend, and two strangers who came to the house one night and never left.
As Elle’s past unfolds, so does the truth - if she can believe it. She must face the reasons for her inexplicable dread. As dark as they are, Elle must listen…before her grandfather’s death buries the family’s secrets forever.

Returned it. Not bad, just wasn't for me.
Even though it was only $4.95, I did end up returning this book for a refund. I don't think it's a bad book, but the characters were not compelling enough for me to want to continue. I really need that "can't wait to see what happens next" feeling and I just didn't get it with this book. I just didn't want to listen to every single detail of each of the characters thoughts. I guess I felt that it progressed a little too slowly for me to be that interested in it.

Not a Great book
This book is written by a woman and yet, it is sexist and even misogynist at times. Women are presented as weak and overly emotional. They need to be taken care of by tough and noble men. This author is SUPER into traditional gender roles and conservative ideation of the nuclear family. The gendered stereotypes are cringeworthy as if the book was written in the 1950s and didnt just take place (in some parts) during the 1950s.
Furthermore there are so many lose ends that aren't tied up by the ending. For example, Judy is said to have had a trucker boyfriend? Is this David? Who knows. More than that, the author drags out the supposed plot twists as if we will be surprised to see them but also drops so many obvious hints and foreshadowing that you would have to be a moron not to see it coming.
This book might appeal to men who want to justify their shitty behaviour with the excuse that they were protecting their family. If this is you, you will enjoy David and his multiple sacrifices for the fragile women in his life. If you are a woman, find a better book, this one is trash.

Roller coaster
A well narrated story that ends rather abruptly with some unanswered questions. Quite an emotional roller coaster of a book. It was quite frustrating how the important details were always held back by the emotional instability of some of the characters.

Dramatic but without substance.
I kept waiting for this story to go somewhere and it never did. It portrayed a completely unrealistic portrayal of a family and their dramas and a simplistic view of mental health issues. All the characters were extremely shallow and incomplete and so many of the scenarios were entirely unrealistic. I'm glad this was a daily deal and not something I used an entire credit on.

I couldn't turn it off, amazing story. Amazing narration. It's fairly predictable but you're still dying to know you guessed right.

The story line was alright. It could have been told in half the time.
