About this listen
Florida private eye Doak Miller agreed to help the local cops by posing as a hit man to catch a woman looking to get rid of her husband. But then he met the wife - and fell, hard. Now he's plotting with her to commit a murder that could net them millions of dollars and the chance to be together. But to pull it off under the watchful eyes of the police, it'll have to be the perfect crime....
©2015 Lawrence Block (P)2015 Recorded BooksDoak Miller retires from the NYPD and moves to small-town Florida, where he picks up random PI work at the behest of the local sheriff. After pretending one time to many to be a hitman, he gets the urge to see what all the fuss is about.
This book is smutty to the point of absurdity, and while the colourful cast is interesting, a lot of the dialogue is weak. Mike Dennis is a decent narrator but doesn’t quite hit the mark here.
Fun but nothing to write home about

I am unsure if Block intends the character as an anti-hero.. because Doak is frankly insupportable. The book is well-written and gritty-gritty-gritty, but I was put off by the uncomfortably sketchy dramatis personae and the unnecessarily XXX storytelling.
As to presentation: Mike Dennis demonstrates solidly professional reading skills with "acceptable" voice-acting.. but nothing particularly special. Furthermore, Recorded Books Inc. editors leave uncomfortably long silences between chapters. The production values are occasionally lazy.
Altogether, I rate 'The Girl With The Deep Blue Eyes' 5/10 stars. Even beyond the near-pornographic sentiments, the book screams "average" as an entry into the Noir Crime Thriller genre. When it leaves the 'Plus' catalog, Pass.
Extremely Cynical
